Well I took Gracie to the vets this morning for her first shots. We got there and there were two gorgeous white shepherds there that Gracie reaaally wanted to play with lol. Anyways we went in and Dr Kaminsky started checking her out and then was feeling her tummy. I guessed why before he even told me. I had noticed that while her vulva was swollen she was not in heat, no bleeding or anything, and I thought her nipples were awfully prominent for her age. I also had noticed that her belly seemed a little big. He confirmed my thoughts, he thinks she might be pregnant.... . Either she is pregnant or she is just coming out of her heat cycle. So he checked his schedule and he has a spot open for surgery tomorrow, so I will be taking her back in tomorrow morning and she will be getting spayed which will take care of possible puppies should she be pregnant. Then she will get her shots and a heart worm test afterwards. I could have left her there today but it would be better for her to just come home and then I will just take her back in the morning. I am wanting to not let her have puppies if she is pregnant because for one, there are too many dogs we do not need rat terrier mix puppies for any reason lol. Secondly, she is far too young to be having puppies. If she was too far along to end it, I would let her have them and then find them the best homes I could, but because we can end it if she is preggers, that's what I will have done. Other than that she is doing very well. She has only had about 4 accidents total since we brought her home on Friday. I went out and got her a crate Monday and that is where she goes when no one is home but she sleeps with me at night. In fact Sunday night she woke me up 3 times to go out lol but at least she wakes me up. Every other night she has slept all through the night. She is now fully switched over to Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul as of today. In just this short time of gradually changing I have noticed that her poop is no longer runny, her breath is better, and most of all she has much less dandruff and dry skin. She still has the hairless patch under her chin where her collar goes and I am going to ask the vet about it tomorrow when I go back in. She has gotten good about staying in the car while I run into stores, which we did a bunch of today because I was looking for a bed for her. I want a donut type bed, not the foam side type, and I want it of regular fabric, none of the faux sheepskin or the microfiber or anything. My cousins have two beds like what I am describing for their two rat terriers that have lasted 3 years now with no holes and those two dig at them like crazy. I know she will dig at her bed too which is why I am being particular about it. I have searched every store in my area so now I am starting to search the web, no luck as of yet though. So that's the update on her. She is burrowed under my blanket on my bed right now, snoozing lol. |

| Oh that is too bad about her being pregnant. But probably best if you can stop it. With her being so young she could have problems? But good luck hopefully everything will go fine and she will be great! |

| Oh, sorry about her being pregnant...she was a rescue? She could have mated with a large male and it could be dangerous for her to have the pups. I think you're doing the right thing! |

How old is she? Will there be a lot of problems if she is pregnant? Keep us up to date. Good luck finding that bed. Don't worry about being so particular about it either. There are certain things I know that we're all very particular about when it comes to our ratties. |

| My grandparents had a rattie and she mated with the neighbors dog. I don't know what breed he was but he was about three times the size of the rattie. Her name was suzie. Anyway my grandparents let her have the pups and she did okay but her delivery was very bad. She did loose a few pups but mom and some babies were fine. They kept one pup and she is about double the size of mom. But i would not recommend letting this happen. |

Yes she is a rescue and she was a stray when the animal control officers picked her up, but she did belong to someone as she was found with a collar on.
I believe that the puppies would not get too huge though you would probably still have possibility of problems but either way I am definitely getting her spayed and not letting her have them. If it had been too far along and we couldn't have stopped it I would have let it go on and cared for the pups and found them good homes but because it is soon enough to spay her and end it if she is pregnant that is what I will have done. Best for her, for me, and for the general population lol. |

I think you are making the right choice too. There are so many dogs out there already needing a home. Good luck with the spay tomorrow. I'm sure she will do just fine. |

Thanks everyone, I am of course being a worried mommy and hoping that everything goes well tomorrow.
How were your ratties after they got spayed or neutered? I have never actually had a dog who we had spayed when I was old enough to remember. I mean all our dogs (and cats for that matter) have been spayed or neutered but our last dog died 6 years ago of old age and I was just a baby when we got her so I obviously don't remember lol. I did work at a vet office a couple years back and seem to remember that smaller dogs bounced back to being normal faster than large dogs but maybe that's not quite true. I do remember that cats and dogs who had gotten out of surgery had their tongues hanging out of their mouths and looked quite silly, and many of the cats would run into the walls of the cage when they were trying to get up after coming to. Ok now I am rambling, Gracie just had an accident on the carpet... after I gushed about her doing so well... oh well eventually she will get potty trained... or at least I hope so lol!
I do seem to have this ability to choose pregger rescue animals... our cat KitKat was a stray who was hanging around our last house. I eventually kept bringing her in until she just started staying in. She was scheduled to get declawed and spayed... until we noticed she was getting big. Yep, she was pregnant and had 4 healthy kittens. All of which we found good homes for (my best friend and roommate for next year actually adopted on of them). While kittens and puppies are fun, if it can be prevented I feel it most definitely should be lol. |

| Max was nuetered and tatooed all at once and when I picked him up the next day and brought him home, he was his old self..just a little slower for a day or two! (of course I brought him to a new home...we moved while he was at the vet..so that could be why he was slower...just not sure of his surroundings) My poodle was the same way though, he bounced back really quickly and he was about 4 yrs old when he was nuetered. |

| When I brought Bailey home after getting spayed, she was pretty much her old self, I just had to help her up on the bed. She did lick on her stitches a little too much (I thought it was ok) she pulled them a little and got some of them bleeding and had to have some ointment when the vet took them out. Other than that she was fine. |

Good luck to Gracie - and you !!!! Most vets, but not all, require an overnight stay for female spays. Please let us know how it goes when you check on her I'm sure she'll do fine, but I worried sick when Daisy had her's done! |

Just got back from dropping her off... I miss her already! lol
She was very cold this morning... I think I am going to have to break down and get her some clothes because she was shivering like crazy until I got the heat going in the car. It is only 46 degrees out this morning... brr!
She had another accident this morning. Went downstairs to move my car and she had just gotten up too and I grabbed my keys and she squatted down to pee... I was like no! and smacked her bottom and she stopped. Grabbed her and put her in the car with me while I moved it then took her outside and she went pee and poop. She seems to not realize quite yet that going inside the house is a big nono... not sure how to make her realize that either. I think I may start doing the bell training with her as I am having a hard time understanding when she needs to go out to go potty or when she is just running around because shes having fun. |

Tips for potty training: First thing in the morning - before absolutely anything else, take or let her outside to at least pee, after being in all night, it's almost a guarantee she will need to go immediately. During the day when you are home with her, I recommend a leash or line hooked to her collar that keeps her with you whereever you go in the house, so she cannot wonder off where you can't see her. Plus you'll be better able to pay attention to "signs" that she needs to go out. The leash will also keep her in close enough proximity so that if she starts to squat, you can immediately issue a stern "No" or "Ack!" which is all it should take to disrupt her and then you can pick her up and take her outside. I highly recommend that you are with her when she is outside while she is being trained. Try to keep her in the area which you would like her to use for potty purposes - and when you take her out to potty that is all you should be doing, meaning no walks, no wandering around or playing, this is potty time! Try repeating over and over the phrase you would like her to associate with going potty, like "go potty", and when she does begin to pee or poo, IMMEDIATELY praise her like crazy: "Good girl, go potty, good girl" - not in to high pitched of a voice or you'll distract her. As soon as she's done, pat her, rub her head, pick her up and kiss her, all while telling her what a good girl she is And then go back in the house - again immediately - after she is more reliably housetrained, you can take this time to give her some "free time" to play, but until then it will be easier if she associates going to a certain area to potty, doing her business, and going back in the house, with pleasing you - which they live to do It won't take long I promise you for her to learn that squatting in the house is displeasing and squatting outside gets her love and attention from you. The key to all of this is you must be there to see her doing the act, good or bad, so that you can IMMEDIATELY react with either a "No" "Ack" or a "Good Girl!!" for her to associate the behavior with the consequences. Are you crate training her? Sorry, if you've said already, I just can't remember all the newbies and what they're doing Crate training can be an invaluable tool for potty training. Good luck today and let us know how it goes. Sorry for the long winded reply |

Thanks for the tips! Right now I only use the crate for when I am gone. She is getting better about it, at first she would scream and cry about it, but now she even goes in there and lays down sometimes when I am home lol. When we go out to go potty (and I do go out with her) I do not play with her at all until after she is done going. Then I praise praise praise... then sometimes we play lol. She has yet to ever go potty on a walk... she seems to only want to go in the back yard which is strange. But I assume she will eventually learn to go on walks as well? I will definitely get her a longer leash so I can keep her by me but not stuck next to me lol my leash right now is only 4ft long. I take her out to potty right before bed and right away in the morning, I was just putting on my shoes this morning when she had the accident. I was thinking about doing the bell training, has anyone else ever done that? It is very quiet around here now lol and I can actually catch up on some stuff on the computer without being attacked every minute or so hehe |

Yes, some members have used the bell...but be forewarned, I also believe some of their ratties learned so well that they would ring the bell constantly just because they wanted to go outside - not necessarily to potty (One of the downsides of having a really smart dog!!!) |
