Okay, y'all, I just gotta talk about my trip. I had so much fun.
First, remember I said I was nervous about hauling the trailer down into the gorge? It's a 13% grade, hair-pin curvy road into and back up the gorge(the place we go is on the other side of the gorge). Well, I had thought about going the long way around to avoid it, but then got to thinking - I'm a ridge-runner from way back - so decided I could do it. Honestly, I loved it! It was beautiful and just a really cool ride. I just put the truck in low gear and down we went. Then, back up! Too cool! We got there about 11:00 Central Time, so had the whole afternoon to ride. My little man did great. His feet didn't seem to give him any trouble and he is so happy to be anywhere in the group. We met up with some friends (a couple) who also have a place there and they showed us some of the trails (again - opposite side of the gorge than we've ridden before), so there were four of us. Choo was happy in front leading, in the middle or in the back. (What a good boy). Then the couple had us over for dinner. Next day was a rain out, the three girls (wife half of the couple, my friend and me) went into the big town of Jamestown Tn and had fun shopping for some cabin stuff, going to the "co-op", a winery and an antique store. Then the four of us went out to dinner last night.
This morning we got up, loaded up and headed home.
Katie and Dixie did fine. They were a bit unsettled at first -- just not sure where they were supposed to be or what they were supposed to do. Once I fixed beds in the very large crate and put them together, they snuggled up together and relaxed. After that, they were happy on their beds at my feet, while I sat on the couch. (My friend is not a big dog person and so I didn't let Katie on the couch, but she was content to snuggle next to her big sister). Anyway, the passed the test and are invited back anytime I come!
I forgot Dixie's remote training collar and I need that for both of them, as both tried to go exploring.
Some of the horse trails are right behind the cabin and they both headed down them - too many new smells! A few lessons to teach them the boundaries, should handle that. Eventually the back and side of the property will be fenced for horse turnout and that will help set boundaries too.
All in all, a great trip, in spite of weather. I was pleased that I backed the trailer right into the parking spot at the stable (the barn at cabin is not yet built, so we boarded the horses at a stable down the road) and hooked it up this a.m. with no problem. Honestly, it's been so easy - I think I must have trailered horses in a previous life! I spent too much money, as I bought a new set of stirrups, a horsey cutting board and coasters, a western belt, and a new bucket. Ooops. Oh, and horse kitchen towels and horse keyholder for the cabin. Oops again. That's what happens when it rains and you go shopping with horse fanatics! Bad, bad influence!
Ok, sorry if I bored you all, but I just had to share!

hahaha, well the shopping was fun -- but we were watching the sky - I think if we'd seen any blue we would have high-tailed it back and tacked up the horses!

Mary Beth, I knew you'd understand how great it is that he can be anywhere in the group on a trail ride. He did great leading -- really got to gaiting nicely. The only thing he doesn't want to do is side up next to something. I was trying to get him to stand next to a big rock so I could get on him and he just wouldn't get up next to it. I ended up getting on him from his "off side" -- he was great about letting me do that -- but boy, did it feel weird. Pam (my friend) was impressed - when I started to do it, she asked if I could and I told her we were fixin' to find out! I sort of impressed myself that I was able to! But, we have to work on siding up to things.

Oh, and I forgot one of the coolest things! We saw an owl! I saw what I thought was a hawk flying through the woods - this was in the afternoon on our ride - then it landed in a tree and turned to look at us -- it was an owl! a Great Horned Owl! So, does it mean something (some sort of omen) if you see an owl in the daytime? It was so cool - it sat there forever and then, duh Jan, get your camera. So I got it out and about the time I got it turned on, he flew away. :(

Jan- You don't bore us with your stories, silly. I sat here with my coffee and read away. You gave a great description and I can see how it would be relaxing.
I'm impressed with the trailer directing and backing up. I have asked my husband to teach me how to back up the boat and trailer into the water, I can only practice when no one is waiting behind us, even then I get nervous and need him to direct me all the way. Go oppostie of the way you want to go? It's too much thinking for this brain.
You can say "I did it" that's everything in the world of womanhood!!!
