NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, in 2005. Ledger and Williams had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'"

His latest role was in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

How tragically sad. I read on CNN.com that he had taken too many over the counter sleeping pills.

Always sorry to hear things like this. We'll never know what really happened even when they do find out the cause of death.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

I don't think they've confirmed yet that he overdosed on sleeping pills. It's very tragic no matter how it happened.

I was working today and this lady answered her phone and screamed and I just thought OMG her dog got hit by a car, her family member is in the hospital, whatever and she said HEATH LEDGER IS DEAD!!! I was like oh...
But it is pretty crazy. OD'd on drugs, supposedly. I wish these people with all this money and fame would stop taking it for granted and realize how good they have it.
Must have been some deeper issues going on. Guess all we can do it pray for him and the rest.

Kendra, I think it is being ruled as an accident.
He hasn't ever displayed any signs of being suicidal. He had mentioned having trouble sleeping and it seems as if he may have taken too many of his sleeping pills.
It's very sad because he was a good actor and he never really was in the media for anything controversial. Even when his relationship with Michelle Williams ended, it was not publicized as much as other breakups. My hearta nd prayers go out to his family and friends who will probably always have that question of whether or not it was really an accident.

His family also said that he'd been sick with pneumonia. I feel really bad for his little girl.

The little boy who was in The Client movie, Brad Renfro, also died recently. He was 25 and had a little boy. They say it comes in threes. Has any other famous person died lately, or will we have to wait and see who the third one will be?

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

It is horrible when anyone dies, it is just so much sadder when they are so young.

I read that his family in Australia found out about it on the news. Too bad that the NYC police didn't get in touch with them first.
