Sorry to all in advance for the rant I am about to go on...

As most of you know I live in an apartment complex, and it is a very dog friendly apartment complex. Every single one of my neighbors has a dog so I am not the only one experiencing this problem. About a week ago, we all got notices on our doors imforming us of pressure washing going on outside of our buildings (or so I thought). The notice informed us to move small items from our balcony as they would be pressure washing that as well. I (like an idiot apparently) assumed that this would be from the outside. Apparently that was infact wrong. i pulled up to my building a few moments ago to the sound of all of the dogs in the building going crazy as I saw the pressure washing van. I assumed that the loud whizzing of the machine (it is very loud) was causing them all to react.

Well  that is not the only thing causing them to react. The pressure washers have come INSIDE our apartments in order to clean the balconies. I'm not sure if this is within my right, but I am extremely upset with this. CoCo is having (or was before I got here) a nervous breakdown. She is not used to strange men in her home, leaving the doors open, using loud machines and worst of all screaming at her to shut the F*** Up. I walked in and there were two men in my apartment, one was pressure washing my glass and laughing and the other was screaming at my dog. They had my door wide open as well as my neighbors. I walked up and CoCo is shaking and barking to the point of near hysteria. I was so upset when I walked in to see this and they were completely rude to me and rude about my dog. I asked the man to leave her alone, and he told me I had a horrible dog and that she tried to bite him.CoCo is confined/crated when I am not home and I am thankful for that, because I asked the man 1. what the hell he was doing INSIDE my apartment? 2. Why was he anywhere NEAR my dog? and 3. What the hell he thought he was doing to her? I am beyond livid right now. I called my building manager on them and caused a scene and I do believe the men have been fired or sent home now because they were only supposed to enter the apartments if any windows were open and mine was definitely not. I also called my neighbor and have gone and gotten his schnauzer because they were doing the same to his apartment. The pressure washers even had the nerve to tell me I couldnt go into my neighbors aprtment. I was MAD and told them off.

Now my main concern is CoCo. She is barking and growling every time there is even the slightest noise at my door right now. I have calmed her down, but I am so afraid that this is going to make her react to the door even more than she had before. She has been a little bit protective of the house and wary of people that enter until I have made it clear to her that they are invited. I am now afraid this behavior and scared aggression is going to worsen or continue. I thank the lord that I came home when I did, because who knows what those men would have done. but for right now she will not calm down, and neither will Trapper (my temporary dog). Both of these dogs are not used to anyone treating them this way and I just don't know what to do now.....

OMG!!! Maggie that is AWFUL - I'd have decked somebody!!! I do hope they were fired and perhaps your apartment management might want to rethink using this company in the future. I'd be livid too -- GRRRRR.... Poor Coco I do think she'll calm down again in time, I'm sure the whole experienced freaked both her and Trapper out!

I don't blame you for being livid! However, I doubt if the dogs will calm down until you calm down. I think you and the rest of your neighbors need to go as a group and complain to the management. Those men do not sound professional at all. Do they work for the complex or are they outside vendors? I would also look around my apartment and make sure nothing is missing.

I don't blame you for being upset! I would've done the same thing! I'm just glad you came home when you did! I can't believe they went into your apartment. What a violation. I agree that you should look around and make sure everything's ok.

Pam I think you might be right. I'm trying to calm myself down so as to get the dogs to calm down. Thank Goodness these people don;t work for the complex or I would be very angry. the apartment manager has already been here to appologize and is trying to make sure none of us complain to her bosses. She has fired the men now, so that is at least one good thing. It also doesn't look like anything is missing, but I don;t understand why these men were given our keys and not escorted appropriately.

Ooh that would make me very angry as well. I don't crate Yogi and I know if that had gone on in our house, with them leaving the doors open, he would've bolted and ran as far as his little legs would've taken him. Thank goodness your pup is safe! They need to be clear when they post things for you guys, if they were to enter they should've explicitly stated that in the notice.

I don't want to scare you, but I've heard of people who work for these companies such as carpet cleaners, etc using that as an opportunity to case the house to see if they should come back later and break in. We had a two man crew cleaning our carpets once and one of the guys asked if he could use our restroom. We showed him the one in the hallway leading towards the bedroom. Hubby stayed in the hallway down towards the bedrooms. Sure enough, the guy comes out of the bathroom and turns toward the bedrooms. He stopped short when he saw my hubby and gave some feeble excuse about getting turned around. In our tiny house? Yeah, right!

Pam- that worries me too. At least I live with My boyfriend and he would be prepared when/if something like that were to go on. Coco and Trapper are a little calmer now as am I, but they are still both very on alert for any noises

Id be furious too if I were you! I had the complex come fix my tub one day and they wrote down on the ticket that my dogs were bad. The dogs were kenneled in a whole different room only thing that could have happened was Buddy teh min pin was barking A LOT because he saw someone there and wanted to play. I called the office pissed that they wrote that and the office clerk laughed. that set me off even more. So I can understand your anger for that. sorry they were like that

How terrible!!! In order for those guys to go into your apartment...don't they have to be bonded? Sounds like they need a new manager at the complex! How traumatic for CoCo!

UGH! What @$$HOLES!!! I say screw the Manager that doesnt want yall to go the bosses... thats your HOME and your DOG and you were totally mislead that anyone would be in your apt. Everyone there (owners, managers, clerks) would know the story and how furious I am! And if I remember correctly from working part time at a apt complex... in Texas... they "apt personnel" can enter your apt at anytime. In Texas, tennants really have no rights as sad as it is...so you may want to check your lease...

Wow, that is unbelievable! I am shocked the notice didn't say "we will be entering your apartments, etc. to clean the balconies,..... How scary for the pup and for you too! Sorry this happened. I am glad to hear the apartment manager has taken it seriously and I bet the other dog owners in the building won't be too happy either.... She'll probably get an ear full from them as well......

Thank goodness it is over!

Maggie,

I am so sorry for the terror your dogs went through. Please be sure that they do not suffer from long term effects like fear of loud noises... I would recommend that you look at your lease agreement about people entering your apartment and how having your dog efects that. If there is any thing that does not add up to what the sgreement says and what happened please, please contact your management company. If something did happen that should not have and it is let go then your on site manager might think that they can get away with it again. Please be safe for you and your dogs!!

So update....

CoCo is not doing so well today. SHe is still jumping and growling at the little noises by the door. When I went out to walk her this morning she saw the pressure washing machine and just started shaking (Don't worry, it is not the same men.) I also have talked to the apartment manager. Usually when they enter the apartment, one of my friends who works at the apartment complex is with them. She knows CoCo and all of the dogs that live in the apartment but she was not there yesterday and is gone for the rest of the week. I have called the apartment owner and he was very nice, appologized and told me he would make everything right. He did say that the management does reserve the right to enter the apartment at any time, but when I explained that the grounds man or the apartment managers were not even near the building, he really got furious. He has also had abut four other complaints so I think he realizes the severity of the situation. He also asked if I would like my locks changed to which I said yes. Ricky was furious when he found out, but right now I just am worried about CoCo. She is acting so odd, and its really starting to worry me.

Poor baby! It will probably take her a while to get over this. Don't give her too much sympathy, because that will make her think she is right to be scared. When she freaks out over a little noise, calmly tell her that it is okay in a normal, matter-of-fact voice. Your calmness and acting normal will reassure her.

I was thinking the same thing Pam - the way we act to things makes a huge difference on how the dogs react to them. React as you would have before....don't coddle her because of what happened.

Hope all turns out well.
