Caesar and Julia were playing earlier this afternoon and seems as if Caesar got one of his left front paw nails cut on the carpet, I guess because I didn't see it happen...I was holding him and noticed blood on my pants (lap)  and looked both dogs over carefully! I finally saw where the blood was coming from and washed it off and thought he was fine, just needed a nail trim tomorrow (which is another story in itself!!!)  Well just now, the pups were playing again and Julia stepped on Caesar's hurt paw and he yelped!!! Then it started to bleed again! He keeps holding it up and not putting any pressure on it... I am calling the vet in the morning!! What do you think he can do for Caesar?? Medicine? Anything like this happen to one of your ratties?? My poor baby!!

Oh gosh, Diane!    I'm soo sorry!   I hope everything is ok. I've never had anything like that happen, sorry! Please let us know what the vet says and ( even though it's easier said than done ) try not to worry yourself too much. *Yeah, right! Look who's talking!   LOL!!!*

Oh no! Ralph ripped his nail off one time I was freaking out. I took it him to my dad and he cut the nail off for me and it grew back fine. I hope your vet trip goes well tomorrow.

Do you have peroxide in the house? If you do I would clean it out with peroxide.

NIbbler ripped his nail off once and it hurt him big time, I put perioxide on it to clean it off first, and I held a clean towel to it until it stopped bleeding. After that I put neosporin on it when he was sleeping so he woudln't lick it off and it grew back completely a few months later.

Jack has bad nails that are yet again falling off. Last night he was bleeding everywhere after he got playing with Jeter. I may have to get that one taken off too. It will heal and grow back if he just ripped it off. Styptic powder will stop the bleeding if its bad bot if you can just hold a little pressure on the foot for a few minutes it usually stops on its own. Keep us posted!

oowwwyyy! Poor baby, I hope everything goes well with the vet. Ratty has never torn a nail that bad but I have. Peroxide for cleaning, I use Tattoo Goo for Ratty's sore places, it is all herbal and if he licks it, it doesn't hurt him. Some tattoo shops carry it or you can go to tattoogoo.com

Called the vet...he said to put peroxide on it (like Jules told me last night) and keep it clean. He asked how Caesar was walking on it...and he seems just fine!! Thank goodness! The vet told me that this is not uncommon but if Caesar is limping on it over the weekend to bring him in on Monday. SO far Caeasar is playing like normal and the nail doesn't seem to be bothering him. I'll just keep cleanig it with peroxide and keep an eye on him! Thank you!

Oh good to hear! I was thinking about this after I talked to you last night and my dad didn't take the nail off. Ralph didn't want me helping him, he ended up biting it off on his own. I just kept it clean til he was ready to take it off himself. It was his declaw, his breeder look one of his declaws off really poorly and it grew back grrrrrr.

Another nice trick is to put a spray bottle top on the top of the peroxide bottle. That way you can spray the nail, if he doesn't like you dabbing it on. We always did that when I worked for my dad at his clinic to remove blood. peroxide has many great uses! lol
