Here is my friend Leah running Bailey in a standard run this past weekend. As you can see, Bailey is not 100%... is a bit distracted looking for me... (I was in the stands videotaping).

Yes... this was the first time. The next day when she ran him, he didn't do as well.... so we didn't run him at all today. However, this particular run was a first-place run, and he ran the course in 18 seconds less than course time.

That was so neat to watch. Bailey did an awesome job! I have to ask though, why did she have him sit ontop of that box for a few seconds? Is this something that they always do in the Agility contest? I've never seen one before, so I'm new to this.

Yes.... it's the "table"... and all standard courses have a table.
The dog has to do either a "sit" or "down on the table (the judge tells you before hand which it is....) and the dog has to remain in that position for 5 seconds until the judge says "go".

That is just so awesome! Wow! I've got to get a few more "redneck" agility things together! I think I could get Amos to do the "pause" table, but he ain't gonna go on that teeter totter or a "walk" either.

Kim... if Amos has a patella issue (am I remembering this correctly?) I wouldn't have him do much jumping at all. What you are doing with him is just fine !

He has hip displasia, and just a little something at the patella. That is why the jumps are soooo low. I don't ever wanna push him to do something for me that would hurt his hips. I also don't push. If he doesn't wanna do it, I just let it go. He sometimes has trouble getting up in the back of the SUV. Wimpers once he gets there. He's been doing so well for several months. Today, when he went to just get up from taking a nap, he wimpered and limped about for just a few minutes. He seems fine now. But I keep a watch on him.

Nora, even though he was a tad distracted (looking for mom!!) he did an awesome job! I can't even imagine the work that must go into training a dog to that level.....you and Bailey are very impressive!!

Hey Kim... I know you do. I hope you don't think that I think you don't! LOL
I noticed in your video that the tire in your hard is almost on the ground -- GOOD idea! I also noticed the jumps are not high. I have full confidence that you are on top of Amos' situation. I honestly wasn't sure if I remembered correctly about Amos'... I just remember that you did take him to the vet and had some x-rays done, but couldn't remember what the outcome was (memory isn't what it used to be! LOL). For you to be doing what you are with him is a wonderful outlet for you both. It teaches Amos discipline and how to focus on you and your commands... and it's fun!

He's doing so well, Nora. I would think that teeter totter banging would scare them to death. Wonder why don't they put a round rubber strip (like they do on door bottoms to muffle the loud bang?

Nora,
Baily is so wonderful!!! You have done an awesome job with him. How old was he when you started the training? Was he the first dog you agility trained?

The teeters are loud... I've never been to a trial where they aren't. The dogs are trained to be ok with the noise. It's part of the training. Dogs with "bad nerves" (for lack of a better word).... usually cannot handle (1) the noise or (2) the distractions. There are LOTS of noises... dogs barking... people talking.... announcements being made....

The dog has to be ok with it all. But I agree -- the teeter is VERY loud, and oddly enough it is Bailey's favorite thing of all ! Many dogs have teeter issues, but fortunately Bailey hasn't.

Bailey was 11 months old when I started training him in agility (and yes... this is my first agility dog. My background is in obedience training - not agility training, so this was all very new and different for me).

In order to compete in an AKC sanctioned trial, a dog has to be 15 months old. They mandate that the dog's growth plates be closed and the jump heights are strictly regulated. Jump height is determined by the height of the dog at the withers. Bailey measures 12 inches at the withers and jumps 12-inch jumps.

Bailey's first trial was when he was 2 years, 4 months old. He will be 3 in Oct. '08.

Thanks everyone, for the kind and encouraging words! This past weekend was tough watching someone else run Bailey instead of me. But the entry fees were paid and I didn't want him not to get to run. Leah is a great friend and a great dog person, and Bailey loves her dearly. We've worked very hard and still have lots of work to do!

Great video! It's so fun to see agility in action. I think he did really well running with someone OTHER than you. That might be a good thing to have him do in training just for his flexibility and focus, yes?
