Anyone heard of "GSN - Without Prejudice"?
It's a new show that shows how easily people pass judgement on others purely based on how the look.
For example: He looks like a terrorist; she looks like a librarian...etc.

You're so right! However, the show isn't specifically about terrorist, or who we think looks like one, but how the average person judges others solely on how they look. The commercial alone made me reflect on my own judgements.

Not to be argumentative and I do understand the point of such a show - to an extent; however, I was taught that people DO judge you by how you look, that you can never make a second first impression, and you are known by the company you keep. So I cut myself a lot of slack when it comes to someone dressing like a thug, or a hooker, and expecting me to just assume that they are decent law-abiding, kind and caring citizens - when they try so hard to give off a different impression.
In fact, it's downright ridiculous for someone in a tight barely-there miniskirt, fishnet stockings, high-high heels and a tube top to expect me to assume she's the president of the PTO and spends her nights volunteering at local homeless shelters and caring for shut-ins.
If one walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck.....people are going to assume one is a duck! |

I dont get the Game Show Network, but if I did, I might watch it at least once---just because it looks interesting. I doubt that it would ever be my favorite show, though. |

| You've got a point there, Tracey. That's what I was taught too. However, there are more subtle cases. For instance, I recently had to take a class at work. One of the other employees in this class just happens to work for the parks department. Unfortunately, he was also a mouth breather. I mistakenly assumed he was dumb and was surprised when he made some really intelligent comments in our class discussion. |

| Oh, I don't disagree there are some subtle cases and I try not to judge people without having met them and talked with them, but as said above you can't expect that all the world is going to take the extension time to break through your outer shell to find and understand the "real you". |

That's why I had to get over my shyness and make an effort to be friendly. People thought I was a snob or stuck up, instead of just shy, quiet, and demur.

I agree with you. I too have had to work my whole life at making an effort to be friendly because I am basically a quiet & reserved person (having kids and being in my late 40's banished most of the shyness), and I was shocked when I found out people thought I was stuck up, when the truth was that I was shy!
I haven't seen this show, but I'll try to catch it next time. Though I learned long ago that looks are often very deceiving. A few years back I worked with a "kid" (he was about 25 or so) who had a lot of piercings (eyebrow, chin, tongue, several in ears) and many tattoos, cropped partially bleached out hair, wore "interesting" clothing (always a silver mylar looking blazer/jacket that I called "Issaac's space suit" and he always laughed), he worked in IT (computers) and was not only brilliantly talented at it, he was a complete sweetheart. Always very helpful and prompt and never treated me like a stupid old woman for not knowing what I was doing (even though I was). I got to know him pretty well, I'd see him in town sometimes, with his very goth girlfriend, going to Raves, or whatever, but he didn't do drugs, drink, smoke, use bad language (not that I ever heard anyway), and was always very kind and respectful.
I understand what you are saying, Tracey, and have taught my kids that people make judgements based on the way you look and unfortunately you do have to pay attention to that depending on what you want out of life. It can help or hinder you accordingly, so we all have to make choices about what matters more to us, our personal style or achieving our goals. |

Dillydog, what a great anecdote.
I heard something once, many, many years ago that resonated in my mind. "See each person with blind eyes and judge only a man's words and actions, for appearances can be altered and often deceiving."
Now, I admit that I do not live by those words every day, but it was indeed, a blind man who told me that. |
