After the filly winning the Belmont, I watched a movie that just "happened" to be on about Ruffian.  It was so good, but what a tragic ending.  I cried and cried after watching it.

I can't watch it. I watched a documentary on Barbaro last night. It went from before his breakdown to his euthanisia. Showed everything to do with when the injury happened, hospital stay, etc. He was a gorgeous colt! But I was crying at the end....he had so much heart.

Anyway, it showed Ruffian, too. She was a beauty! And it talked about how when she broke her leg on the track and they operated she came out of the anesthsia running - and broke another bone and had to be put down. With Barbaro they had him in a water tank as he woke up...but in the end it was all just too much.

Yes, it showed Ruffian coming out of the anesthesia.... she came out of it "running" (she thought she was still running). OMG it was SO sad. I sat there and watched the whole thing. I did not know the history of this horse and it was just on television so I decided to watch it. I'm always up for a good horse movie! Well, I wish I had not watched it. It literally tore me up and I did not settle down to go to sleep until the wee hours of the morning!
It also showed her breaking her leg on the track. I screamed and covered my eyes.. and started balling...

Yes, see, I can't watch that - not knowingly anyway. It's too sad. Just your description makes me feel sad.

Which reminds me:

Mary came out of her room a a year or so ago and said, "Mom, Ole Yeller's on T.V" and I tried to warn her and I told her no way was I watching it again. I saw it once when I was like 8 years old and was completely heartbroken. So about an 1 1/2 hours later here she comes, bawling her eyes out. I told her she should've listened to me.

I watched the movie on tv also.  It was indeed sad.  I remember Ruffian -- Foolish Pleasure was the famous colt that year, having won the Ky Derby, but Ruffian was actually the only undefeated horse.  She broke her leg in a match race with Foolish Pleasure.  (For those of you that did not see the movie.)  What a waste.  It was the last match race ever to be run.  Because Ruffian was a filly, she did not have that stallion attitude -- she was a great filly.  This was back in the mid-70's - they have made progress in how they operate and recouperate horses now.  But, yes, like you Nora, I was in tears at the end (even though I knew how it would end).  I wish they wouldn't run these horses so young -- and I hope that every track in the U.S. converts to PolyTrack soon, to cut down on these injuries!   Her death though did bring the treatment of racehorses to the forefront and some changes were made in the industry -- so, for that, her death did accomplish something.

By the way, Nora, I don't know if you remember this -- but Ruffian was foaled at Claiborne Farm - the farm we visited on your trip here.

Oh my! I KNEW I had heard that name before. I do remember now that you jogged my memory. I remember them talking about how she might be even better than Secretariat...
Sad how they did not take the trainer's advice. He advised them NOT to run her... to wait.... he knew the horse better than anyone. As usual...unfortunately... greed won out... and that beautiful filly paid the price for it.
We humans sure do make messes, don't we?

Yep. Of course, she was not a Claiborne horse when she was racing, she had been bought by the Philps (????) or something like that. It is a shame that owners go for that greed and fame at the price of their horse.

I would say she was definitely the "Secretariat" of fillies.

I went back and read that Ruffian was born at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky from some breeding stock which the Janneys kept there. Wow... what a true shame.
Someone remind me not to watch movies like that again. They just about do me in...

I do not like sad movies at all! Hubby and the boys will look to see if I am crying yet, which I always do.
