This is my chi Rico he is in alot of pain this is his second time of having a infection and produing crystals and having bloody urine. right now fo rthe next two weeks he is under antibodics and being watched carefully. the vet thinks something is also wrong with his Prostate so a Nueter is on the way in  the very near future. he is really sad and not wanting to play as much and he looks so worn out.

My Oscar had an infection (peeing alot and tinged with blood) and I gave him a half teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with a little canned food and he was back to normal within a few hours.  Apparently making the body more acidic (with the vinegar) helps prevent or get rid of the crystals.  Some say it's the minerals in the food and tap water.  Do you feed him dry food? The lack of moisture in the dry food pulls moisture from his body, meaning less water in the urine causing the urine to be more concentrated with waste and forming crystals.  He must drink more water!  It would be best to feed him canned food for awhile,  even adding water to it to make sure he gets as much water as possible, so he flushes the minerals (and whatever else the kidneys are getting rid of) out of his system.

I didn't mean to ramble on, but the bottom line is that I would try the apple cider vinegar mixed with canned food.  I would also add water to the canned food to make it soupy.  If possible,  use distilled water.  It's a good idea, when you go back to dry food, to add water to that also. I do it to make sure my two are getting enough water because Oscar doesn't drink much but readily slurps it up when it's added to his kibble. I hope little Rico is better soon.

Ski... interesting that you mention this because just this past weekend some agility folks were talking about the apple cider vinegar being so effective for UTI's. I had never heard of that before... but then over the past year I've gotten QUITE an education at several levels.

My dogs drink TONS of water, and also... you can always mix a tad bit of dark karo syrup in the water to sweeten it... helps make them want more water.

Lisa -- I hope Rico gets better soon! You might want to talk to the vet about changing his food if this is a recurring problem.

Just an idea from a few years ago.....IF YOU FEED YOUR PUPS KIBBLES THAT ARE RED THEY WILL CREATE THE CRYSTALS ALSO...one of my male pups did that and the vet made me take him off the kibble food that had reddish kibbles in it or I would pick them out....If you hold their kibbles up and really look at it you can see the shine on them...it looks like little sugar crystals on them....

May your shadow include your four legged friend.
