This is my first time to own a rat or does he own me? Found this web site searching for information and found it to be both informative and entertaining. So, here are a couple pictures of GUS. |

BTW: Read your profile. I'm sorry for the recent loss of your lab. And I'd also like to thank you for your many years of service to our country. And, I don't don't know who told you ratties are hard to train, but I've found that they are extremely intelligent and when trained properly and early are very easy to catch on to what pleases their "people" and they love to please However, I will say that sometimes the high intelligence of the breed can be a drawback. My Daisy can "figure" things out and manipulate with the best of them - LOL! |

Hi DaisyMom,
Thanks for your comments. I really miss Elmer, but Gus takes up ALL of my time now. He is at that stage where he tires everything, but also like Daisy, he figures out ways to get what he wants. I wouldn't trade him off for anything as he has already become part of the family.
Thanks again, Budd |

Bud, your story really touches my heart. We have owned three black Labs and are presently down to one 4 yr old Lab, Dixie. We lost our beloved Bonnie in Sept to cancer. She was treated five years ago at Auburn and we thought she had licked it, but it reared it's ugly head about this time last year. We ended her pain in Sept. She was especially precious to my husband, they had a bond I could never compete with. After 9 mos. he still can't speak of her without tearing up. About a 1.5 years ago we got our Rattie, Katie Scarlett. It was my idea, I saw her and HAD to have her. Well, let me tell you, me thinks my husband has stolen my dog. If you are a lover of large dogs, you can't help but love these big dogs in little bodies! Katie jumps on our bed every night and gives my husband dozens of goodnight kisses. Now how could he resist that. Our Lab, Dixie, is a sweetheart, but it is KS who makes us laugh constantly. Though you will never replace the Lab you lost, I'm sure you are finding that you love Gus for the pup he is!
As far as being hard to train, I found Katie to be very easy to train except in one area -- it seemed to take me longer to potty train her than it ever did any of my Labs. Maybe because she was so dang little she could sneak away to the back room easier! At any rate, she finally caught on that the potty was outside!
I'm so glad you found our group. It's a great place to learn about this breed and to have fun in the process. Oh, and anytime you want to trade lab stories, I'm right here!
Bless you for your service to our country. |

| Thank you Budman for your years of service to our country. I know it's not said often enough, but it's folks like you that keep us free. Thank you! Welcome to the site and to life with a rattie. Couldn't help but notice the stuffing around Gus! Now there's a classic rattie trait! They rip the stuffing out of toys faster than anything I've ever seen! Last night, I gave Shiloh a new teddy bear and wasn't quite fast enough... She tore it's bow off and ate it! (That should be interesting sitting in the yard later...) Anyway, welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, compare notes and yes, even brag about how ultra-intelligent these little guys are! Looking forward to getting to know you both better! |

Bud, I too would like to thank you for your many years of commitment and service to our country. Gus is adorable and indeed a fine looking rattie specimen! Trust me... these dogs are NOT hard to train. They are highly intelligent... eager to please... active dogs. Until I got mine (Bailey), my training experience had been with other breeds (many german shepherds). I wou ld put my rat terrier's intelligence up against any german shepherd I've worked with. I have four dogs and I love them all, but my rat terrier is my "soul" dog... Welcome to our site. We hope you will join us often and feel free to jump right in with comments of your own! |
