****DISCLAIMER...I am NOT doing this to make people feel sorry for me, I just want everyone to know what these people are going to be facing.  Most people don't realize the damage that comes from a flood!!*****

Unfortunately this is what most of the people that are involved in the Indiana Flooding right now, will be facing.  This WAS my first home.  (On a side note, this was one of the hardest things I ever experienced, but it also ended up being the BEST thing.  We went through hell and came out in heaven!!  It was a long drawn out process, but I grew as a person and learned that there are still wonderful, caring people in this world!

(these are pictures OF pictures, so the quality isn't great.  The brown on the wall is where the water sat for almost TWO weeks.)

I live in Greenville NC. It was after hurricane Floyd in 1999. My oldest son was 11mos old. The worst part of the loss, was that I lost his first outfit, first shoes, first lock of hair...that kind of stuff. I lost my Bridal portraits, but managed to save my veil, bouquet, and wedding pictures. The next hardest thing was my tanning bed!!!!!!!!!!!! I had only had it for three weeks (and my Mom...who I was buying it from....STILL made me finish paying for it.) I lost my car too......BUT, I did not lose My life, the lives of those whom I love, or my Dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We almost left Sampson, b/c we thought it was a false alarm and we would be back the next morning....we lived in the hundred year flood plain.....nothing to worry about right????????? WRONG! I grew as a person through all of this and learned to be thankful for what I have.

It's all good.  It was my first lesson in life, where I realized that I honestly could NOT count on my family and that I was on my own, with my hubby and his family!   My Mom didn't even offer to help me out with bottles, diapers, clothes for the kids.....NOTHING!!  I did get a small garbage bag of clothes that she didn't want anymore.  (THANKFULLY, I did have flood insurance and the insurance agent TWO WEEKS into it, wrote us a check for 5K to get us started on new clothes and immediat neccesities...up until that point, Kevin's Mom was getting us what we needed!!  The people on the other side of the river (the untouched side) were fighting each other of bottled water that was being given away, while the rest of us....STUCK on this side, were pulling together and driving over TWO hours to get the basic neccesities!  it definitely brings out people's TRUE characters!

Kevin and I BOTH worked for the same water damage restoration company and we had to go around and clean and restore other people's homes for TWO WEEKS before we even knew if we still had a home!

So far (knock on wood) I've been lucky. Water 2 inches from coming in twice. I have always had enough warning that I can get all the babies to high ground, swan a couple once, and wait it out. I can only imagine how devestaed I would be if I ended up like Brandy and what now looks like Jan. My heart goes out to you both and all the others.

What is so awful is that your stuff is still there but you can't really use it cuz everything gets ruined and moldy. Sad. And the pics don't do justice to the horror of a flooded home I don't think. Sorry you had to go through that Brandy but yay for your and your amazingly positive attitude about it!

It is what it is! Life is full of good and bad...you HAVE to take the bad with the good. I think that Jan kinda lives by the same philosophy. Once she is able to get temporarily settled, I'm going to call her and see what she needs. I would MUCH rather send her and her neighbors what they REALLY need instead of what we THINK they need! If you want to send something to her, I guess that I am going to be the "central" receiving place! Just email me with what you are planning to send and I'll send you an address. I am going to talk to my boss about receiving stuff at the warehouse, but he is on vacation all next week, so it will be at least next Monday before I get an answer. My intention is to get the ok from him, and post my warehouse address up here, so that anyone that wants to send something, knows WHERE to send it. Then on a certain date....to be decided later....I will have everything shipped out to Jan.

(does that make since?????????)

Wow Brandy looks like my house.. Bless your heart hon..
I stepped inside the front door today and saw all the mud and muck everywhere.. You could see where everything was floating around in the rooms...
I was afraid to walk very far into the house because of it being so unstable..
The foundation is much worse than I thought..
I got my wallet / credit cards that had been in the house since Saturday.. thank God they were still there...
and my laptop and digital camera, and my parents urns...
I will salvage what I can and replace the rest..
except for the heirlooms from my Grandmothers that got ruined...

Jan, I just had to tell you the story about my Bibles. They were sitting on a small end table (about 2 1/2 foot tall) as you can see the water line was very visibly OVER three foot. When we went in to see what we could salvage, most everything was ruined, either from being submerged or from the mold. I walked over to that little table and there sat mine and Kevin's Bibles, as good as they were when we left. They were completely untouched...even though everything else on that table was ruined. I still use that same Bible.
