We still have our feather "kids" and we are going through LOTS of bread!   The dogs are doing a good job of  duck sitting, and Lucy likes to make sure they get plenty of exercise by walking back and forth around the pond to make them swim to the other side!

The ducks don't seem to mind the dogs at all... but I do watch them like a hawk when they're outside... I have no doubt they'd love some duck dinner!

I love these updates! That is a lovely water garden you have. If I had something similar close to my home, it would be a haven for "skeeters". Do you have a aerator? or pump? One day......sigh.

That is cool.  Your pups dont go in after the ducks.  Mine would think that was their own pond and not share

Thanks Kim! There is a pump that runs a waterfall at the top of the pond, but it isn't running right now. I'm posting an older picture of the pond that sort of shows what the top part looks like,  but is a little bit hidden by a plant.  I think this was taken way back before we had Holly, and before Lucy went blind. You can tell Lucy loves hanging around the pond, ducks -- or no ducks... but she does NOT like to swim!   We had never even planned to have a pond, but our backyard was like a swamp, and one end always had standing water in the fall/winter/spring. One day I told my hubby "We might as well have a pond at that end of the yard.. since it's always like one anyway!" and even though I was just joking... I came home from work a few days later to a pile of big bolders in the driveway... and a few days later we had a pond! Hmmm... then he couldn't stop... and we have 2 more smaller ponds in the front yard.... so I'm really careful about what I way these days!

Michelle: Both Lucy & Holly fell in the pond just 1 time when they were puppies (supervised).... and it turned them off of water for life I guess! The pond isn't very deep, and has a wide ledge all around it so that they can even get out by themselves.. and did when they fell in. None of the foster dogs we've had were interested in swimming in the pond either. It's so funny how some like the water... and some want nothing to do with it!

that is a very lovely pond! Really enjoyed the duck/dog pics, Karen. It's so fun to see interspecies interactions.

Yes -- we have large & medium size goldfish in the ponds. Bruce had Koi in the ponds for years, but a Great Blue Heron finally got all of them. The biggest one we had Bruce moved out to the front pond, thinking it would have more hiding places. One day it was raining and stormy, and were looking out the living room window,  and the Heron was standing on the edge of the pond. Bruce got his video camera and set it up on the tripod, and just got done saying "He'll never get that fish, it's too smart" hmmmm next thing we see is the Heron eating the fish!  I'll have to have Bruce convert the video so I can post it. He has a professional video camera, and the files are huge. It really is something amazing to see... but we were sure sad for that last Koi!   The goldfish seem to have an easier time hiding.... lucky for them!

The house we are in the process of trying to purchase has a Koi pond in the front yard and I know absolutely nothing about them.  When we went to look at the house, the pond was SO dirty.  I didn't even think there were any fish in there because you couldn't see through the 'muck'.  Mike however, saw 3 different fish come up to the surface briefly so we know they are in there!  I doubt the homeowner is going to clean it before the end of the month which means the task will be mine.  I think the pond will have to be completely cleaned out which means putting the fish into a bucket or kiddie pool temporarily?  How hard and expensive is it to care for the fish and pond?

Bruce never has to take the fish out when he cleans the pond, but there are different ways to clean them (depending on how dirty they are) and I found some pages online that talk about the different ways you can do it, and one has slideshow pictures of cleaning a pond. I don't think once you get it cleaned up and treated it will be too hard to keep up. There is lots of info online about taking care of them, and if you have any questions I know Bruce would be happy to answer them too. My daughter has a pond in Virginia, and she was just telling me last week about barley straw that you can put in the keep the water clean. She said it did a good job of keeping hers clean last summer, but it's gotten yucky over the winter.  I'm sure Bruce knows about they straw, but I don't think he's ever used it.  I found some info on the straw, and will post that link too. The fish don't have to eat until it gets warmer, they just had out all fall and winter and then just seem to show back up when it gets warmer out... so they're not much work either.
