This is an old picture taken in Dexter NY (near Watertown) in 1920. The kid on the right is my Dad. The kid on the left is his best friend all their lives and the guy with the gun is the older brother and his dog. The picture has a "Grapes of Wrath" or "Little Rascals" quality, don't you think. My Dad told me that Gilbert and his dog were inseparable and when he got very old, Gilbert had to take him in the woods and shoot him. Bygone days.....

At first glance, that's what I thought of "Little Rascals". Such a classic huh? The only one smiling really is the dog.  It's so solon and serious.  It really is a wonderful portrait of the times. Bill, how old was your dad??

No need to have a vet in those days, just take care of it yourself. I know that some men still do that today with their hunting dogs.

It is! In fact, the daughter of my Dad's friend is 6 days older than me. We have been close friends all of our lives and much closer in college...LOL. She has the same picture in her home.

That's what they used to do when dogs got old.... they did not euthanize them. I remember as a child some of our dogs "disappearing" but I was never told until YEARS later that they were killed because they were elderly and sick... and no longer 'functional'. I remember too our dogs had very little vet care other than the annual rabies shot received at a local clinic usually held at a local school once a year. People would spend huge amounts on vet care for livestock... but not for dogs.

But I digress... sorry. This is a wonderful picture, Bill ... one definitely I'm sure you treasure!

Wow! That's awesome! I just LOVE seeing old pictures like that. Imagine a picture taken now of a kid, his friend and brother with a gun. National Security would be called in.

My Dad spent his summers in Dexter. His Uncle ran the paper mills. We spent summers out there when we were kids. My folks retired and had a nice pace in Adams Cove on the lake.

My ex was stationed at Ft Drum. We were there from 2001-2003. Most of the paper mills were shut down at that time. When we first arrived the first thing I had noticed was that there were tons of houses on the market because of the mills shutting down. The job market was horrible when I lived there. But it was beautiful there in the Spring and Summer. My ex had an aunt that lived in Cape Vincent. She had a beautiful house right on the St Lawrence and I loved spending time there. But winters were way to much for me and after he got out of the Army we moved back to Delaware.

Yes that part of NYS always gets hit hard with the cold weather....from ohio up to montreal, the cold is different here it's very damp where the areas in the north are a dry cold ....My brother's inlaws have family there on the river....The ride on route 11 and 3 are best to see the mountains and if you are coming up from Albany Route 9....

The mountains are very beautiful. We had actually planned on staying up there when he got out of the Army. Even though the winter was harsh the summertime made it worth it. However I worked as a Price Surveyor for the PX and it involved me driving around all day long. So after I would get to work at 7 am I had to spend about 30 minutes de-icing my company car and then drive in the snow all day long. Towards the end of the winter our landlord really ticked us off so we gave our 30 day notice and left. I do miss it sometimes.
