I have noticed this before -- I think this is a wren, but it's so puffed up I can't tell.  This is a column for our front porch.  We are having rain and high winds tonight and this little fellow has found a snug place.  The other night in bad weather there were two of them next to each other all snugged up.  I just think it's so cute.  (And no, this wasn't taken with the new camera)

Don't know what it is, but it sure doesn't look like a bird. Tail looks hairy and that looks like long-shaft fur sticking out around the body. Head is totally hidden, so it's hard to tell. Tail doesn't look like feathers to me at all.

When I first looked at it I thought the same thing. But, I think it is a bird all fluffed up. If you look closely, the tail tip has an indentation - which is, I think, the end of two feathers. I think it is a wren. At first, I thought a chipmunk, but it's tail isn't right. I think the little strips on the side are the strips of a wren's tail and the body, again look closely, looks like the ends of fluffed up feathers.

Ok, now I must know what that is!

Is it small?  Because I've been looking up wren's and they are tiny! Here's a picture of an adult wren... the tail markings and the colors look like a wren....

Yes, Kim, it is a wren. A Carolina wren to be exact -- we have several around here. One year I had a wren nest in a pair of ankle boots I left in the garage (barn boots). I have to be very careful during nesting season to close the garage door or they start building nests in there. That particular year I had to leave the door partially open when I was gone until the babies grew up!

We have a lot of wrens here, too. Mostly Berwick and Carolina. It's just that they're so small that even fluffed up, atop your column, that looks too big for a wren. And wrens usually turn their tails up so cute. Never seen one put the tail straight down before. You may be right, as you were there. Just can't get a sense of object size from the photo nor from the perspective.

Yes, wrens do turn their tails up, but I think this little guy was hunkered down for the storm. Size is hard to tell in a photo, but I think size-wise, being all fluffed, he was the right size for a wren. They get there in bad weather, so I'll try to get another picture with the new zoom next time and maybe we can figure it out.
