Great photos. As far as I'm concerned, people cannot possibly post too many photos -- I love looking at them. I think that camera has a 10x zoom, doesn't it? That's the mistake I made with my camera - not enough zoom -- so I'm jealous. My camera also has developed that spot that I had fixed about a year ago. Don't think I'm going to invest any more money in repair -- maybe I'll ask Santa for a new one!!! Keep posting those pictures. And you live in a beautiful area! |

| I recommend a visit in the summer time. It's already sprinkled snow on us once for a few minutes. The cold is yet to come! Fires are already built daily in the wood stove... nippy out there! Makes me want mulled cider and a warm blanket, my rattie curled up on my feet. |

Will doJan! I have a feeling I'll be carting this camera everywhere.. Kim, I can't wait either and I'm concerned... I have no clue how to cover it for winter, we have 70 mph winds here at times. Trees blow away, I haven't a clue how to keep a tarp on it but don't want it to disolve! |

| In days of old ( a long, long time ago) people built their homes of earth, sand, straw and water. That's what i'm attempting to do. Gonna take a few years as I have zero help! |

Angie,
I have set up my change jar and whenever I have change I add it to the jar. Who knows I may actually save enough to get out there some day and help with the cob house. I'm still collecting rocks for the gnome village, this is particularly hard as I live in the flatlands almost next to the ocean, with nary a rock hill in sight!!
However, I do have some sources for rock. Good friends have a vacation home up in the mountains in Ashe county and I have told them to be on the look out for interesting rocks to bring back to me!!
I may try to do a mini and I mean micro-mini Cob Cottage for the village but will have to see how the back and hip hold out. Folks already think I'm nuts because I use a large piece of card board and nearly wind up on my stomach to work on the landscape! But hey it works.
I'm loving your photos! keep taking and posting. what kind of camera was it again? |

It's a fujiS700 with 10x zoom. Super neat, I'm having a ball with it. Hey, try this my friend... I did this at the kitchen table last winter. Bring in 2 coffee cans, one full of your native soil, one full of dried grass, broken the smaller the better and packed full. 1 large salad bowl, a pitcher of warm water and ALOT of rags. This is best done near the kitchen sink but be sure the trap is in place. Plumbing doesn't really like mud and sand inside...(Nor will your salad bowl, if you want it to be easy to clean afterward, spray the bowl with cooking spray before putting the dirt inside) I made minature cob structures on flat rocks on the kitchen table. I made 2 mother figures and a really cool mushroom and learned just how easy this stuff is to sculpt. That put me in the mood for the grander scale full sized cob house and in all honesty, this stuff is far easier to work with on a small scale! Rolling boulders reminds me that not only am I getting old (everything hurts) but I'm stupid enough to do this on my own! It's not easy to convince others to feel a need to dig trenches, roll boulders, haul gravel, dig holes and finalize it all by sqyuishing around in waist deep mud! LOL If you can't find flat rock that suits you, (I understand your no rock dilema, although mountain areas usually have lots of rock, we live at the base of Mt. Shasta, which is volcanic sand, I have had to drive and drag all the rock for this project on to site!) You may try planks of wood. Mud sticks to wood pretty good! If you have troubles getting it to anchor, drive in a few nails to the base of your plank, underside... you want the pointy ends up to adhere mud to... (Can you tell I've messed with these theories a few times? LOL) You could build your little gnome cob cottages on the planks and then insert them into the landscaping areas next spring. You could even cover the planks of wood with cedar chips, gravel, etc. instead of rock if you can't find it. I want to come play at your house too! I've got one of those someday change jars too... wistful sigh.... What would we do without somedays?... |
