 Firehouse Big Dog

I went out to feed Trix, a mini rex, bunny, that Josh and I got from animal control, 8 years ago. The dogs had gotten a hold of his blanket, and ripped the bottom of his cage out, and killed him. I am so sad right now, and mad at the dogs. I have frequently scolded them for jumping up on his cage. I know Josh is happy to have his, "bun buns", up in heaven with him now. He was still warm, and not yet stiff, so I know it happened this morning. He is a beautiful mini rex. I had reinforced the bottom of his cage, because they had already killed another rabbit I had the same way. I feel ike I let Trix down, by not insuring his safety...I am so sad. I wrapped him in a fleece blanket, and buried him. I had already called out sick from work today, because of my stomach. Please keep Josh and Trix, in your thoughts, and prayers. I will miss Trix tremendously...I do not plan to ever get another rabbit. These dogs are just too prey driven. |

Sorry, Donna.
Were the dogs all outside alone?
I called in sick today, and had the back patio door open, so they could go in and out, without having to keep getting up, to let them out. I have a big privacy fenced in back yard. I know it is my fault. His cage, is around to the side of the house, where, I have to walk around the corner, of the house to see it, and my don's boat is parked there, so not too much room to hang out around there, and they run around the corning from there, and I cannot see them, in the rest of the yad, and where I usually sit, on the old wooden play house, I would not have been able to see over there. I know it was them, because, it was obviously done by the rattie shake. eyes bulging, blood, coming out of his left ear.

Not trying to place blame, Donna. Accidents happen and there are NONE of us who are as vigilant about supervising as we should be. I just feel badly that it happened... realizing of course, that even the best trained dog would probably do the same thing. It's simply their nature. A few weeks ago I was outside washing my car and had all the dogs outside with me. Not paying attention as I should have been... the phone rang and it was my niece who rents my mom and dad's house 1/4 mile up the road. She asked me if I was missing Bailey... and sure enough....he had gone across the field to their house to play with the kids I guess.... who knows. This is the only time in 4 years that this has happened, but because it DID happen...now I've got to be MUCH more careful and supervise much more closely. Dogs will be dogs, and their instincts/natural tendencies will surface if given the opportunity. |

I am so sorry that you have to go through this. Maybe it was time for Trix to go be with Josh. That is not the end that any of us would want, but it happened. Don't be too hard on yourself. We all have those seconds where our minds are not 100% on what we should be doing and bad things happen. My son, at age 11 months nearly drowned in a bucket of water - before they were recognized as hazards, because I wasn't 100% focused on him, but his twin sister at the time. Fortunately, he responded with the first breath of CPR and with no permanent damage. But it took me years of guilt to get over it. I know it hurts, but you are neither a bad person or uncaring. None of us are perfect - or else we would be gods... Lorna |

I had an experience with my huskies years ago killing our cat who jumped up on the wall. I felt horrid for days but now realize that dogs will be true to their nature. We cannot trust them; however, accidents happen and we cannot be everywhere all the time. You took great care of your rabbit or he would not have lived as long as he did. Go easy on yourself and feel better.

Thank you for understanding...I can feel that you truly do know how I feel. I had called in sick to work yesterday, and wonder if I had gone ahead and gone to work sick, maybe it would not have happened. I cannot bury Trix, with Josh, because he is in a mausoleum. I called in sick today too, because everytime I think about it, I get so sick to my stomach...I know there is nothing I can do to bring him back, just like when Josh passed away. I just have those, "what ifs, should haves, could haves", bothering me.
