| I am glad you finally fessed up...It was hard to keep that secret ya know...By the way, I was at work when Reni had her babies, and my husband was home, but said he "did not know nothing about birthin puppies", and hung up on me. I would have come home, but he said two were already out. I just prayed she would be ok. I could not afford to lose my job, cause I gotta feed my rattie babies! |

Tinkerbelle's grand dam was a blue, so I couldn't choose a stud with any blue. That took me down to just a couple of possible studs. One had a bad knee that I could see even though the owner said he did not. One was a toy and Tinkerbelle thought he was little jerk...no attraction and I didn't see how that could be good breeding a toy with a mini. The other was the one my vet recommended, he had sired beautiful puppies and my vet bought one of them for his son. Tinkerbelle fell in love and acted all friendly around him even before she was in heat. I also fell in love wiht him and he with me. Anyway, I checked his pedigree and they were not related and he didn't have any blue. So, when the time came, I let nature take it's course between the two lovebirds(I mean dogs).
These will be pet quality dogs, I could not find a champion stud to breed with. I'm hoping that I have 7 healthy puppies and I will find forever loving homes for them or they can come back to me. I was planning to keep a female if I wanted to breed again, but my DH wants a male, so we will see. Tinkerbelle will be spayed before her next heat cycle in November.
Just wondering...The dad is not "Surf City", out of Sue Conney's ratties in Lake City Florida, is he? Cause that is Brielle's brother. He is a beautiful Tuxedo. |

Thanks everyone. No he was not Brielle's brother, he was from North Georgia. I didn't mean anything strange about "pet quality". I just meant that they are not show dogs with championship lines. I did talk to some show breeders, but they didn't stud their dogs out to average folks like me. I will certainly recommend that they spay/neuter and give them the information on the local spay/neuter shelter for the minimal price.
I'm not much into show anyway. I love my pretty girl like she is my own baby and I want her babies to be loved and adored in the same way. I think Rat Terriers are awesome pets and I can't wait to share that with my friends and family who are getting puppies.
Jan, keep working on Randy....Katie Scarlett needs a little southern belle to raise up right like an auntie should!

I guess I thought he went to Lowe's or something and came back to puppies. I knew you were at work and Reni came early. How many days was she? Tink is due on a Sunday, but I have a feeling with 7 and with the pressure they are creating on her belly, she may go a bit early as well. I don't want them to come to early, but Friday or Saturday would be better as far as me getting her to my vet's office if there were an emergency.
I know what you mean about husbands. I told mine that I needed to go buy some hemostats to do cord care and he thought that was crazy. He said we just go to sleep and when we wake up we'll have puppies! I think he was kidding....I hope he was kidding! |

That is a perfect name for your next little girl! I actually tossed that out there when I had my daughter Rachel. My hubby didn't like it cuz he went to GA Tech and I went to UGA. He thought I was naming her after the bulldawgs!

| Hee hee, now I didn't think about Georgia Bulldogs, no wonder Randy frowned when I said that -- he's a grad of Alabama. We had a dog named Bama and Dixie Pride is named for the Alabama fight song "you're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide" -- Maybe I should have told him we'd name her Allie (but I still like the name Georgia better -- and he's a native of Atlanta too!) |

Reni was due June 25th, and had them, the 22nd. I don't know about cord care. The mama dog, chews it, and eats the placenta at the end. If you do too much for her, you might end up having to feed them too, cause she will think, "heck I will let her do all the work..." hee hee! |

Yea, I might post that question under the breeders section. There is a breeder at my vet's office who cuts all of her cords and takes away all of the placenta's. She told me that they would make Tinkerbelle vomit. I was thinking I would let her eat a few and I will try to not get too involved, but she might get tired with 7 puppies, so I need to be prepared to step in and help if it is needed. They (my vet and this breeder) also said I may need to give her oxytocin or Nutri-cal if she gets tired and stops contracting before all the pups are out. I'm really hoping that I don't have to give her a shot of oxytocin for 1)I've never given a shot before and 2) I've heard it can cause the placenta to break 3)that's wicked stuff-I had to take oxytocin with my first child and it makes the contractions much stronger.
I did buy hemostats today along with lubricant if one gets stuck and a rectal thermometer. My neighbor said I can borrow her scale, so I think I have most of my supplies in order...just need lots of towels.

Carol, I would post some of these question under the breeding section as there are lots on here who have gone through this and could give you advice. I worked for a vet and really, giving a shot is not hard -- can you get your vet to give you a needle and syringe and you can practice on an orange. At least that way you will have the "feel" of it. You are really worrying and I bet Tinkerbelle will take care of it just fine. Mama dogs just know what to do. And, if things get hairy, load her up and take her to the vet. But, I bet you and Tinkerbelle will do fine -- you might ask your doctor for some valium. |

Small hand towels, or large wash cloths are good for lining the crate, because you can change them out each day, and they are soft and absorbent. I keep my ratties in a crate, with a fleece blanket over it at night and during the day, partially, to keep out the drafts. Some people use a kiddie pool, but I did not like the thought of an open top, over the puppies I bought a food scale at Publx, for 8.99, that has a removable bowl, with a flat surface, to lay the puppies on..

Hey, I'm teasing you. I'd be the same exact way. I thought about breeding my mare (the horse I had before Choo Choo) and told Randy if I did, when it got close to time, I would be moving to the barn. I would be a nervous wreck. Heck, I'm a nervous wreck now, and I'm just the aunt! |

Oh, how exciting! I just love that 3rd picture of her. They do look so pitiful when they get that big, don't they? I remember Bella's mommy being pregnant and how she was always so pitiful...you just feel so bad for them, haha. Little do they know that soon they will have all of those mouths attached to them to feed, haha. Can't wait to see puppy pictures! |

You absolutely can come up to the lake to play, since I understand the one near you is still pretty low! Um, but does this mean you will be bringing seven puppies?
