Tinkerbelle's Mommy

but, I want to confess.  Tinkerbelle didn't eat a cantalope, she is pregnant.  She is due on July 27th and according to an ultrasound that I had done a couple of weeks ago she is going to have 7 little ratties!  I've been having a hard time not telling while I've enjoyed seeing all of Donna's puppy pix and seeing people ask about those babies.  My babies will be available in September at 8 weeks, so if you don't get one of Reni's, you might could get a puppy fix in Georgia.  I'm not going to ship.  These will be purebred babies and they will be socialized with children. So far 3-4 are spoken for.

So, the cat's out the bag and I'll be posting with my questions.  Tinkerbelle, the pickiest eater in the world, has had nausea and she is spoiled and getting used to me cooking her chicken to mix in her food.  She has gained 4lbs so far and looks more miserable everyday.  She wants to get these puppies out.  I can't wait, although the thought of 7 puppies to whelp does scare me a little.  I don't think I can run to the store and come back to find a crate full of babies like Donna did.   I'm sponging up as much information as possible and I'm setting up my whelping kit and getting prepared.

So, here is Tinkerbelle without her usual tiny waist!

The daddy is a black tri in the tuxedo pattern.  My vet set me up with him because he had seen 2 litters by this stud.  They were in love, but now I feel like a pimp.  She's going to be a single Mommy and never see her lover again!

You silly girl!  She's not a single mommy - she has you!

How exciting and if I could talk Randy into another dog I'd come down to Georgia and get a Tinkerbelle baby.  Tinkerbelle is a beautiful dog and I know you have done a good job taking care of her through her pregnancy.  I am so excited.  I can't wait for the puppies and to see the pictures.  She will be a wonderful mama I know.  Gosh, Katie Scarlett feels sort of like an aunt, as do I.

Keep us updated on Tinkerbelle and her babies! And congratulations.

I would love to know more about how you picked the papa - did you have to do any sort of checking with the vet about clean genes or whatever (you can tell I've never done it lol). I know that like blue to blue is a problem and A type to B type obviously is a no no. Just wondered what you have to do to make sure the 'baby daddy' is good stock or what have you. If he is as handsome as she is pretty I am sure they will be lovely.

Tinkerbelle's grand dam  was a blue, so I couldn't choose a stud with any blue.  That took me down to just a couple of  possible studs.  One had a bad knee that I could see even though the owner said he did not.  One was a toy and Tinkerbelle thought he was little jerk...no attraction and I didn't see how that could be good breeding a toy with a mini.  The other was the one my vet recommended, he had sired beautiful puppies and my vet bought one of them for his son.  Tinkerbelle fell in love and acted all friendly around him even before she was in heat.  I also fell in love wiht him and he with me.  Anyway, I checked his pedigree and they were not related and he didn't have any blue.  So, when the time came, I let nature take it's course between the two lovebirds(I mean dogs).

These will be pet quality dogs, I could not find a champion stud to breed with.  I'm hoping that I have 7 healthy puppies and I will find forever loving homes for them or they can come back to me.  I was planning to keep a female if I wanted to breed again, but my DH wants a male, so we will see.  Tinkerbelle will be spayed before her next heat cycle in November.

Carol: Good luck to Tinkerbelle. She looks huge already and still has a ways to go! I'm glad that you did a lot of research and gave careful consideration before choosing a mate.

Just curious, but when you say the pups will be "pet quality" does that mean you'll request they be spayed/neutered (somehow that's the impression I've gotten when seeing this phrase from other breeders)?

Not answering for Carol, but when she said in her explanation that they would be "pet quality" she followed with she "could not find a champion stud" - so what I think she means is that she does not have championship breeding -- I say "who cares!?" I so wish I could have one of Tinkerbelles' puppies. I could go down and visit family and pick up a puppy!!! Oh, Carol, I've been working on Randy but my working isn't working.

I know back when I was involved with showing Dalmatians a "show quality" dog was one that was going to be (or try to be) finished to a champion level and potentially used for breeding whereas a pet quality was for a pet and would be ALWAYS spayed/neutered to prevent them being bred. It was in the contracts. Not sure if that is what is meant in this case though. Altered dogs were not eligible to compete for confirmation (since the whole point of confirmation shows is the betterment of the breed etc).
