Reni Is A Toy. Trixie is a Miniature. Pumpkin is a Decker Giant, or Standard. It kinda works the same as Poodles. There are some rumors of Tea cup Rat Terriers, but I would think they might be Chi/rattie mixes.

I actually read that even toy rat terriers are not true rat terriers that they are mixed to produce that size, though i forgot what they were mixed with.

Dink is a Type A (Toy) Rat Terrier...I was told by the breeder that both his parents are full Ratties (we didn't get papers) but I had also heard that they bred Rat's with Chi's to make the Toy  'back in the day'  I dunno???  When we got Dink I didn't know he'd be a Toy...I just assumed he would grow to be 12-15 lbs.  I heard that was the size range that all Ratties are supposed to be.  I didn't know till I joined here that they come in different sizes.  I'm assuming Dink is going to stay a Toy b/c he's a year old now and under 10 lbs.  This is Dink at 3 mos he was only as high as 2 bricks as you can see (not counting his head)

I just posted additional information in the other ongoing thread about sizes/varieties. The toy variety of rat terriers likely was created later in the breed history as a matter of human convenience seeking a smaller, more portable dog. The toy size would not have been beneficial to the work they were originally created to do, i.e. keep farms free of vermin. A large rat would easily outweigh a toy sized rat terrier. They were, yes, most likely breed (as many breeds are) with chihuahua in order to "down size" them.

there's two branches that have chihuahua (one on the right in green and one on the left in tiny black) the toys probably just have "more" chihuaua in them? course i'm no genius in genetics lol jmo

Looks like my family tree....ha ha ha!!!! That's why I say I am of American heritage All the history gets a bit complicated. Which, of course, the rattie is generally considered to be an "American" breed.

Thank you!!  He's a keeper!!

I just had to go back to my calendar and look, he was born in June, we got him in Sept, his first vet appt was Oct 1st and they said he weighed 6 lbs, he was 15 wks old.  He was and is very long legged.  He's 1 now and only weighs 8 or 9 lbs (he's due for shots so I'll have the vet weigh him again)  He's very sleek and muscular.

This is one of the most recent pictures of him.........

Dink looks about the same size as Morgandy, just a hair smaller.  She weighs 9 pounds now but needs another 1 or 2 pounds so that makes her a very small mni-rat!
