I went to Camas and picked up my beautiful little girl yesterday!  I was nervous about the car ride back, but she was SO GOOD!  She slept the whole way, maybe whined 3 minutes total out of the 3 hour drive   She threw up a bit, but it could have been so much worse!  The whole ride she didn't have to go potty.  And the best part?? Since I brought her home, she has gone potty in her litter box 5/5 times!!!  I am SO PROUD of her!!  She was a bit overwhelmed yesterday with so many new faces, but today she has a much bigger personality!  Haha I love the way she prances around, she was playing fetch and falling all over herself.  She even slept through the whole night!  She woke up once, after 5 hours of sleeping, and started whining, i let her chew on a bully stick in my bed and then she fell asleep right in my arms till I was ready to wake up!  She has been such a good pup so far!  The only thing I'm having a hard time dealing with is that she does NOT want to be left alone, she was SCREAMING today when I went in the living room today and left her in her play pen.  I know I have to get her used to being on her own then, or there are going to be some MAJOR seperation anxiety issues when she is older.  Does anyone have any good advice on that?  I had chew toys, a kong stuffed with peanut butter, and a bully stick in there for her.  She had food, water, her litter box, her crate, but she just wanted me   Do I just let her cry it out?  I am afraid I'm going to anger my upstairs neighbors (or my roomies).  Anyways, here are some pictures of her!!!

she's adorable!
i have a dog with terrible separation anxiety, and let me tell you, don't let it get this far! I picked him up every time he whined and spoiled the heck out of him. i would definately make her whine and cry it out. and definately start on crate training, that is the one place mine won't whine, and a crate will help her learn boundaries. good luck!

haha I don't know how much she weighs now, I'd guess 3 lbs, but she's supposed to be around 8 lbs full grown. She is SO TINY, I don't notice it till I'm standing up and she's on the ground. She gives 'rat' terrier a whole new meaning, she's the size of one!

Olive is adorable! So glad you are enjoying her. ratties do seem to be prone to seperation anxiety. Yaz is 2 now and she's fine as long as she knows I'm in the house. It's when I leave. She FREAKS. We have to BOLT out the door before she can run out with us and she barks and whines for about 5-10 min. but then she's fine. It's just the leaving.

Crate vs. xpen will give her more security (esp when you are not home).

Music or TV or radio can help

Don't fuss over her or make a big deal when you are leaving her

Try not to go to her until she is quiet so you don't reinforce the screaming.

If all this fails, get another rattie to keep her company.

I agree with Gwacie -- I prefer crates over x-pens especially at a very young age. "white noise" (ie... music/tv/radio etc. will help).

I like Gwacie's last suggestion too! LOL

She is already a stunning beauty!!! Congratulations - and please post TONS of pics of her - doesn't matter how/why/what's she doing ... just post them! LOL. I can have a "virtual puppy" through you

You're definitely going to want to use Gwacie and Nora's advice. Read through the training forum. I would head off potential problems with your roomies and / or neighbors by talking with them right now about how it might take a few days to a week or two for her to settle in and that you are going to be working hard on helping her adjust and learning to settle into her crate when you can't be right there with her (both when you're busy in the house, and when you leave) and that she might fuss/cry/whine/bark at first but you have to do this so that she will learn and be a good/great neighbor friendly dog for years to come.

Olive is adorable. You can't go wrong following Gwacie and Nora's advice. I always leave the tv on for my two when I leave the house. With it on it cuts down on the outside noise that they can hear. I find that soap stories work the best for them cause they have human conversations going on and that seems to comfort my two when they hear people talking they think they are in the house with them.

Well, you already know it, but she is a Q-T-PIE!!!!

Crate training is the way to go!   It takes them some getting used to, but it pays off.  I too would suggest letting her cry it out  and talking to your neighbors and roomies is a great idea!!  Also, when you put her in, (and I read this on here someplace) walk around a bit til she settles down- then leave.  Don't make a big fuss out of it.  Put her in and act like it's no big deal to be in there.  They sense things from you (pick up on your vibes) really!  So when you leave, you can leave quietly, or in a very cheerful voice just say- I'll be back!"   Give her the vibe- it's no big deal.

Congrats!! And good luck!

Thanks everyone! That is great advice, and I will start today when all my roomies wake up! Ha! I have to start training it as soon as possible because every time I pull her out of her crate when she's screaming, I KNOW I'm just reinforcing the screaming, but when my roommates are sleeping I feel so bad! She's such a good pup in every aspect (besides the screaming haha) I can't believe how lucky I am! 2 whole days of NO potty mistakes!
