I have an 8 week old mini. Whats the best way to get her to stop biting? Please help!

What is she biting? You? Be consistant. Tell her no very firmly and stop playing....ignore her. Start to play again, repeat if she continues to bite. You cannot ever let her think it is okay to bite. Make sure she has lots of chew toys. Give her those if she keeps biting to replace you. Jack did this for a while....I think he was probably around 4-5 months when it satrted to phase out. Now he may mouth me but never bites when we are playing. Good Luck ad Welcome to the site!!!!

MY TAUNEY DOES THAT SHE THINKS IT IS FUN WHEN SHE BITES AND I ALWAYS TELL HER NO, BUT WHAT ELSE IS THERE SHE HAS PLENTY OF CHEW TOYS SHE IS ONLY A MONTH OLD I GIVE HER A TAP TO TELL HER NO AND SHE STILL CONTINUES!!!!!

I would hold trixies nose and say 'NO BITE' firmly and stop playing. They are very smart and she picked up on this quick

Bingo is a 5 month old rescue who may have been abused in the past. He was taken into rescue because his owneer dropped a television on his leg. When we reach for him he pulls back. We've only had him 4 days. Is there a training book or video to recommend? He is very smart.

First: Welcome to the site and bless you for rescuing little Bingo. Was he seriously injured when his prior owners dropped a t.v. on him? Second: We must see some pics We love to see everyone's ratties. Now, is the only issue you are having thus far the fact that when you reach for him, he pulls back? Does he cower or run or just slightly move out of reach? My first instinct is to say to give him a little more adjustment time. It's only been 4 days and his treatment prior to coming into rescue isn't probably entirely known, so he may just need more time to feel comfortable. I would try sitting on the floor and watching t.v. or something and not really paying him much attention. Maybe put a doggie treat in your lap and gradually allow him to come to you. Even if he comes close enough or gets on your lap, resist the urge to reach out and tough him. Ideally, I would have my hand lying near my lap so I could perhaps stroke him with a finger gently. Some dogs - especially if there was abuse - are a little gun-shy of hands coming at them from overhead - if you understand???

I would let him walk around the house with a very LIGHTweight nylon lead on his collar... only about a foot long so it won't get tangled in anything. When you want him to come to you, get down on his level .. take the lead by the hand and hold it... give him a treat and praise him...this will train him to be still when you come towards him. Getting down on his level will make him feel less intimidated.

Button was REAL bad about play nipping when she was a pup & had little needles for teeth. We tried all the above-noted recommendations, but nothing seemed to work. Discussed it with our vet, who recommended strategically placed water pistols around our favorite chairs. One squirt instantly deterred the behavior. We also used them for other seriously undesirable behaviors like inappropriate clawing/barking for attention. Worked like a charm for her. Rarely does those things now. If she does, all I have to do is say "Do I have to get the pistol?" and she stops and goes off and does something else.

This is an awesome site . My LEO will play nip when he is excited and my saying no does not calm him. I have to be patient as I hold him and try to calm him. Sometimes it is very hard. Last night as i was preparing for bed he went crazy (He sleeps in his bed next to me on floor) and when my son came and told him to stop he got barked at. My husband's no got him calm and in his bed. He usually goes straight to his bed. He sometimes goes in his little Leo World and stares at you before coming out of it. Some of the hints are helpful. We are going to try them. Daisy's MOM you make me think of Uma Thurman.

This never worked for me. What did however is to fill a spray bottle with half water and half vinegar. I would give my puppy a squirt to his body and say "no bite", or "down". This has worked wonders.

Angel has been biting, and I don't give her toy, just the firm no, and ignoring her. If I give her a toy she will get in the mindset that she is being rewarded for biting. I bite, I get a toy. Sometimes she just sits in my lap and chews on me. Then I put her on the floor with her NO BITE, and let her find her own toys to chew on, on the floor, by herself.
