Has anyone here had their female dog spayed during a heat cycle?  Lucy has an appointment tomorrow morning, and she seems to have decided over the weekend to go ahead and start her next heat cycle NOW instead of in October, like she promised me it would be!    So, she is in the first 5 - 7 days of this thing now.  I called the St Francis Animal Hospital (that's where she and Bo are supposed to be tomorrow at 7:30 am) and explained what was happening, and asked if I should re-schedule Lucy for maybe sometime next month?  They said not necessarily.  Said it was a "little messier surgery" if done during her cycle, but they do it a lot, and as long as they are aware of it, they can be alerted to possible excess bleeding and take all necessary precautions.  I went to a few websites, and found opinions for "yes" "no" and "maybe"---so that was of no help.  Here is one of the things I found on a dog health website:

I took Rags to the Vet earlier today..... Was told she was spayed when I got her...(Turns out I was lied to about a lot of things about her) .... Well she is in heat Shocked I was told to wait until she is over her heat to spay her. My SIL said it can be done during the heat.
What are the opinions of the group? Why is it more money during heat?
Also why do Vets recommend waiting until after? Health risks?

The reason they like to wait is because there is an increase of blood flow to the vessels of the reproductive system, so more risk of bleeding. However, it is done all the time. The vet and assistants just need to be aware of it.

How do you guys feel about this?

When we had our Sadie spayed she was in her heat cycle. It happened about the same way yours did. They charged us a little more to do it, but it was only like 10-15 dollars. Afterwards she didn't have any problems that were unusual for being spayed. My mom and aunt actually looked after her for the first couple of days because of other commitments. She was groggy the first day after, but then she was back to her normal self. From experience, I would say that it's not that big of a deal from your prespective. The doctors do have to take more precautions, and that's where the extra money is necessary. If your vet is willing to do it, i'd say you might as well.

Thanks, Beth.  I really wanted to go ahead with it, because I dont want to risk unplanned puppies, and I know that even after Bo is neutered, there are still a few bullets left in the chamber for a few days.

Unplanned puppies would not be good. There's too many puppies in shelters already

We have lots of action going on tomorrow. Good luck Lucy and Bo! Tag team 'em Paul, heehee. If the vet is okay with it than I wouldn't worry.

When I got Izzy spayed the vet said if she was in heat the only difference would be the cost. It can be done. The reason they charge more is because of all the extra blood ( not to be gross) , it makes it a longer surgery and its more time for the doctor to complete. Other than that they didnt seem too worried whether she was or wasnt in heat.

Haven't had one spayed while in heat but what I've read about it agrees with what everyone is saying. Let us know how they are both doing today!
