Mario was bitten or stung by something today while we were out doing yard work... It looks like a target.. there's a red dot in the center of this very red ring. He doesn't seem bothered by it, it's not raised...I'm still worried. |

| Put some benedryl cream on it, and watch it. Maybe give him a quarter tsp of the liquid benedryl. My vet said that dose is safe. |

Yeah, the picture isn't the best... the red ring is perfectly round but there is a red dot right in the center of it. Mario is snuggling in my lap right now and I am absolutely obsessing over this mystery thing. If it doesn't look any better in the morning, I may call his vet. Not sure if I can get anyone on a Sunday though. |

People get the same rash when they get a tick bite and it's Lyme. I dont know if animals get it too, or if you live in an area with ticks. I pulled one off of Rylee tonight, tick season in NY has begun. It's not fun.

I didn't consider a tick. Hmmm, Mario just got a Frontline treatment last week. I'm sure we have ticks around here (upstate SC) but I haven't seen any on him. He's mostly white so I'm sure I would have seen one on him. I'm really worried... I know I sound like a crazy person but this is so weird. It hasn't changed at all, not better or worse. I need to research tick bites ... thanks for your input!! |

We have those woolly worms... is that what you meant? They are brown not white though. I feel pretty sure that some sort of insect bit him or stung him. It's just weird since it's not raised at all. Don't bug bite swell a little? I'm really confused by this.. the good thing is that Mario is acting like his normal self. He doesn't seem to be feeling sick so that is a very good thing. I just wish I knew what this was. I probably won't sleep tonight. |

Could be, Sara... he spends time in our backyard if it's pretty so it wouldn't surprise me. We canceled our exterminator service and plan to switch soon. I've seen lots of spiders around the yard. I hope Mario will be okay. I know I'm being obsessive... I know it, but I can't help being worried. Ugh... I just hope it's nothing too bad. |

As long as he is acting ok and not fussing over it I bet it is ok. Just keep an eye on it, and make sure it doesn't start to look different. |

| I have had a spider bite. At first it was two tiny holes, kinda in the shape of a ying yang, only separated. Then, I scrubbed it in the shower, thinking is was from one of the doggies' toenails, then it started getting whitish puss in the two holes, then they came together to make a bigger single puss bump in the middle, then the red was around the outside, then purple. Then I had to have it cut out of my leg, and it made a deep hole in my leg, I had to irrigate with saline solution, and stuff it with about a 12 inch piece of skinny guaze for a while, and take antibiotics, til it healed from the inside. Not fun.... |

| I think you would have noticed a tick. They take awhile to dig into the skin. I usually use Frontline Plus on Lucky and have never seen one dug in. I pull 10-15 ticks off of him every time we go to the cabin in Michigan and always get them while they're still crawling, looking for a place to settle in. |

| Yes, dogs can get lyme disease. The "bullseye" rash can be a symptom and can occur several days after a tick bite. I don't know that the rash is common in dogs, however. I would just watch it and if it becomes worse, get him in to the vet. Have you had outbreaks of lyme disease in your area? If so, Mario may have already had a vaccination against it. They don't give them routinely, I don't think -- but would if there had been problems with lyme disease where you are. It doesn't really look as "angry" as a lyme disease rash, so I'm thinking it is something else. Probably a reaction to some other bite. However, the rash with the clearing in the center is definitely a symptom of lyme disease in humans. ????? I don't mean to worry you -- but, I would keep an eye on it. |

Here's a pretty good link to a site about lyme's disease in dogs. It does talk about the bullseye rash in humans, but I can't see where it mentions it for dogs. Plus, it recommends tick preventative, such as Frontline Plus, which you say Mario just had. Anyway, here is the link, FYI

Shannon ~
Sure don't have any idea if "this" could be what Mario has... but thought I would post info on this for anyone that hasn't heard of it before... so they'll know more than I did at the time!
Last fall Holly had something that was a circle with a hole in the center. It's real blurry, but I'll post a picture of it. I thought at first it was a puncture wound, and so did her vet. It was looking infected, so she gave her an antibiotic and a wash & antibiotic cream to put on it twice a day. I was suppose to take her back in a week to have it looked at again, but the infection cleared up right away, and 3 days later something just didn't seem right, so I took her back early. I was massaging this cream in twice a day, but there was a "lump" on one side of the the hole in the center of the circle that didn't seem to be going down. When it took her back in they knew right away what it was... and it was SOOO gross!! The vet came back in the exam room with this big ugly thing that looked like a maggot!!
Holly had given "birth" to a "cuterebra" (also called a warble) and is a bot fly larva!! They get on the animal's fur as they brush past them (or can even go in through the nose or mouth) and then burrow into their skin to make a nice place to grow. The "hole" in the center of the circle is it's breathing hole. Once they get full grown they drop out of this hole to the ground. They are very common in rodents, squirrels.. and unfortunately rabbits, dogs, cats and other animals. Holly hardly has any hair, so hers was easy to see... so her "fly baby" was born premature... but I'm posting some links to more info, and what these ugly buggers look like when they get the chance to be full grown!

| When I was a kid, we had a cat that had "warbles", and it looked like a gunshot wound in it's neck. I remember my dad pulling the thing out of the cat's neck with a pair of tweezers, and we poured peroxide in the wound. |
