We live in a neighborhood where we are unable to have a fence.  We have a 3yr old Yorkie who is still not the best at staying in her yard when she doesn't have her tie-out on.  She is now teaching the new puppy her bad tricks.  Does anyone know what kind of electric fencing you can use with small dogs and does it work??  We need to do something.

Thank you

Amy

There are several different kinds of electic fences.  The easiest kind is the radio controlled.  You put a radio collar on them and then turn on a receiver inside your house.  The range is pretty good on them, but obviously it doesn't follow your exact property line.  It goes more in a circle.  We used one with our first rattie and thought it was great.  They are smart dogs. They pick it up really fast where their boundaries are and then they won't go past them.  Our's had the freedom of going in the front and backyard. Our rattie loved to just sit on the front porch and watch the world go by!  You have the option of adjusting the shock level.  You always use the lowest setting necessary to make the correction.  The correction is not suppose to hurt them, it is just uncomfortable for them.  When we corrected our dog she never yelped, she would just turn around and come back in the yard.  When we first introduced it to her, she would jump a little bit.  I think it was more of a surprise jump, like what is that feelling around my neck.   There is a training process you go through with them so they understand what is going on and they will get if fast!

I use the Petsafe small dog invisible fence for Jack. He trained to it like nothing! It is made for smaller dogs and has 5 different training levels from tone only up to level 5 with the static shock. Jack at this point could go out without the collar turned on and doesn't even go near the line. Weinstalled it less than 3 months ago. It is available at Petsmart and other pet stores. I couldn't live without it. He was on a tie out, but I just felt bad because if I tried to play catch or anthing he would run off so I couldn't ever let him free. He is happier now than ever!!!
