Well after much frusterationg and a final decision never to try to make a cake in a "professional" manner ever again, here was the final product. In which no one is even eating haha. It was yellow cake with buttercream frosting and then i used the fondant (which was the part i hated doing) to attempt at doing a "gift" look to the cake. I guess it's okay for a 1st try but i think i'll stay away from using the fondant. \

OMG! that is gorgeous!! Why wouldn't you want to do that! I wish I could, I would be making cakes left and right... for no occasion!! I would probably make them for my neighbors (who don't really know me either ) just to show off!

| Yeah tell me about it. I knew nothing of fondant and found it it tastes like gum but without the bubble haha. I enjoyed doing it and probably would have enjoyed it more if i wasn't focusing on trying to clean the kitchen while doing that and then laundry and really really wanting to go to bed. I need to do another one on a weekend night when it's just me and im not so tired and have other things to do. I will admit it was kinda fun |

I usualy stick to buttercream decorations, and sometimes do stuff with molded chocolate. Let me see if I can dig up a few that I did.

| Never heard of it. Thanks for all the compliments. Makes me want to attempt something again. i will definently be staying away from the fondont for awhile until i learn a little more about it. Plus this one i didn't do much research on, just bought the stuff and kind of went at it. Richie's uncle does cakes, i mean totally awesome but doesn't do it for a living, hell you're lucky if you can get him to do a cake for you, but when he does it's a total piece of artwork. He does the "theme" cakes, for instance, he did a realistic looking nude woman for someone's 21st bday, a guitar for richie's brother's bday etc. I would love to be able to do that, but i'll start with the small stuff. Plus the cake itself i'll admit i'm still using the box stuff, but the buttercream i did from scratch, had to go back out to the store to get corn syrup to thin it up to be able to spread it on the cake, AFTER i had already done most of everything. Any tips/pics etc are helpful. thanks |

Well, if you are going to be making cakes like that you are going to have to make it a point to watch Ace of Cakes at least once! It comes on the Food Network channel and they make the most amazing cakes. They use LOTS of 'fondont' like you are talking about, so maybe watching it will give you some ideas? I don't know, its a pretty funny show. When I saw your cake, it made me think of the show. Your cake looks great, you should be very proud! |

Great lookin' cake! I've watched Ace of Cakes and it IS a pretty interesting show. My favorite part is when he occasionally will make a big super-detailed cake just to blow it up! hahaha I always wondered what that fondant stuff tasted like---never tried it. Well, your "1st project" turned out really pretty! You should be proud of it. |
