Right now i have tank going on puppy pads becaus I live in a apartment, he is pretty good at it now, sometimes has accidents, but is it possible to convert him to outdoors now, whenever I take him somewhere he wont go outside, i have had him at a picnic before and nothing for like 4 hours and when we get home he will let out a huge puddle on his pad. Same outcome whenever we go anywhere. Im worried i trained him the wrong way. |

| Nope, you did right... Sometimes it is easier when they are very very young... But if I were your, just start gradually moving the pad towards the door a little bit every few days. Then after it is completely by the door for a few days... he will go to the door and start looking for his pad... then you can take him outside. I would even put a pad outside the door so he knows he has to go "through" the door to go potty. I did this with Shadow... but he absolutely loved the outside... and took to it right away... but we still had a few accidents. But accidents happen with puppies and people too. |

I'm not a trainer or anything and someone I'm sure will help you with this, but I just wanted to share my experience with the puppy pads. Liberty and Justice used the puppy pads for almost 3 years in our apartment before we got our house. I was really worried about them not going outside and wanting to use the puppy pads instead. So I was talking to my Dr. (who also has two ratties that had the same problem) who suggested that I take the puppy pad and move it closer and closer to the back door each day. She said then when I get to the door move the pad outside for them. So Liberty and Justice would then go and cry at the door for the pad. I had the pad outside for one day (yes my neighbors thought I was crazy) , but after I removed the pad I never had a problem with them wanting the pad again. I would praise them in the beginning each time they went outside. Which I think helped. Anyway I hope this helps a little. |

Oh you beat me to it! Good to see someone else did this too!

I lived in a third floor apt for the first year and half of my dogs life, and now we live in a house. I second what all the others said. Also, we trained our dog to potty on cue, which might be an option to help transition. It's easy enough to do, choose a command word, whatever you want to use. Ours is 'go potty', but some trainers would advise to stay away from that just because it's a more common phrase that people use with children. I've heard cues to be "Hurry up", "do your business" or "make a tinkle/stinky" (that one makes me laugh everytime), you get the idea. Anyway, when they are going, give the phrase as they are going, then treat when after finish (as long as it's in an approved place..). They'll eventually get the idea that if they 'do their business' when you tell them to, a treat is coming. When I lived in an apt, my husband and I would take her downstairs when we could, but the middle of the night is not exactly when I wanted to trudge downstairs. She used pads and outside from puppyhood until we moved into our house a few months ago. She hasn't had an accident in a very very long time. |

Hi, Erika! Fancy meetin' you & Copper here! I just joined this group this week & glad to recognize a few names here. Chatty place to be. Looks like everyone here uses many of the methods I have used in the past, too. The moving the pad/newspapers closer & closer to the door worked with the one dog I used it on. Did that over a 9-day Spring break and she was trained before I went back to my classrsoom! Then I decided to just quit using them and with subsequent dogs, I just started training from day one to go outside. Have done it that way ever since. |
