For Med342: Hopefully we'll get the Crate Training faqs post back up from the old site. I don't crate train so the others can fill you in on that. What I wanted to tell you was that I wee pad trained Mayfly as a puppy. She was great, always went on the pad, never had an accident. BUT would not go potty outside.

Now, I'm gone for 10-11 hours a day so I wanted her to be able to use the pad when no one was there to take her out. So, I would remove the pad while I was there and keep her outside (either in the yard or for a walk) until she just HAD to go....then praise her like she peed pure gold! LOL It took a long time and a lot of patience but she does go outside now. I still leave the pad if we're gone a long time. It also helped when her sisters would pee....that would usually make her pee if she'd gone several hours without.

Hope that helps a little. Good luck!

I've never used the puppy pads but have crate trained. It works great for me. When I was house breaking Mario, I kept him on a long leash and took him out often. When I couldn't keep my eye on him, he was in his crate. I'm home all day so crating for us wasn't for very long. Now, he rarely goes in his crate and is allowed to roam free in the house if I leave for short periods of time. Good luck. :)

We do the same thing with Jerry. He always scratches on the door when he needs to go out, but we don't trust him at night or when we're not home. He stays in his crate during those times.

Chips and Annie came to us apparently housebroken. We still use crates. during the day when we are gone they are crated in the living room. We have 2 crates for each of them. chips has a nice big 36" crate for the day and a 30" crate in our bedroom. At night we have 2 crates in our bedroom. Annie is locked up for 2 reasons. We still don't know her limitations and also she is so tiny I am afraid I will step on her and kill her if I got up in the middle of the night.

Chips has free roam of our bedroom but sleeps in his crate with the door open. I work the night-shift on Saturdays. When I get home on Sunday morning at 7:30, I walk both dogs. Annie is then left to roam the room and she goes straight under the bed to sleep. Chips tried his best to get back in bed with both of us but if he won't stay off, then he is locked in his crate. He sleeps with Jeff all night on the bed. He also sleeps with me when I work night shift during the week. I get home and do the walks and we all pile in the bed. Jeff is already gone to work.

I tried the pee pads with Lucy when she was a puppy but all she did was either pee next to it or chew it up. I crated her if I were going out. Lucy just within the last probably six months was able to have full run of the house when I'm not home.

My dogs are trained to both, actually. When it's rainy or really really cold, I put piddle pads down for them at the end of the hallway and they all use them. But when the weather is nice, I don't put the pads down and they go outside. I think to have them trained to the pads in case of bad weather is a wise thing to do! Dogs can be trained to do both!

That's what I'm doing now with Mayfly...when I'm at work all day or it's a rainy, icky night I put the pad down for Mayfly. And I've discovered that Skipper will use it if he really has to go and can't get out!

I've been trying to pad train Hunter but he isnt catching on that well!! Unless I sit right there and wait until he finally goes, he just wont have anything to do with it. At night he sleeps with me and if I should wake up I will let him off the bed to go potty (with any luck on the pad) and then he returns to bed with me and well honestly he does AWESOME at night but its during the day whether Im home or not he just refuses to use the pad if Im not basically forcing him to stand there til he goes! I even got this spray stuff to help him learn that is where to go potty...dont waste your money! So now Im going to follow Hunter's daddy's advice and get a crate. I sort of want to crate him while Im at work all day but Im afraid that since he has had the full run of the kitchen (large kitchen) while Im gone all day that down sizing to a crate will cause him to whine and bark while Im away (as of now he hasnt done either) I just hope I can crate train and pad train..wish me luck ARG!

If I had done anything differently, I would have crate-trained Rosie for real (she's half rattie, half ACD but she's built and mentally like a sturdy rattie at 25 pounds).
I had never had a dog before and I lived in a small place next to a neighbor that took a night job 2 weeks after I brought the puppy home.
I ended up having no choice but to use puppy pads while I was gone at work and I used the crate at night and as her "time-out" spot (this ended up working for me, given the space we lived in).
I got her to the point where she was on a good schedule - she'd wait for me to come home at lunch and after work but not if I allowed access to the spot where the puppy pads used to be.

I have since moved into a bigger place where there are 4 other women like me- single girls with smallish dogs but Rosie is admittedly challenging and I don't want to subject the nice neighborhood to mornings of Rosie crying in a crate.

Again, she is to the point where if she's denied access to the spot where she thinks she ought to be allowed to go then she will hold it.  The trade off of moving to a better place was that it's further away and I can't get home at lunch anymore.  She does hold it all day but sadly, she can't be trusted even for an hour so when I leave, she's in my bedroom.
An odd sidenote: She only has doody accidents, rarely does she pee in the house.

We're finally at a happy place.
She knows to go outside and as long as she's denied access to her spot inside, she is really good about not having accidents!

I do think that if I'd committed to crate training correctly, she would be a little bit better in terms of seperation axienty and in terms of being able to focus and behave but we're getting there!
She's always going to be a handful and I wouldn't trade her for a gentle lazy dog for the world!

I had no luck whats so ever with the pads but I started the crate training last week and right away he has figured out that outside is the best place to go!!!
