Is it taboo to breed an erect ear dog to a button ear dog? Not that I am planing to breed! Lol, my males are of breeding age but I am waiting to get them OFA certified before I even consider breeding/studing them! I was just sitting here on the couch and the though popped up. I know that a natural bob tail can't be bred to another bob tail.

As far as I know (and I'm not a breeder) - there is no danger in breeding ratties with different ear carriages as there is when breed two natural bobs to one another. I think aesthetically some breeders probably try to breed erect ear parents to one another to increase the liklihood of obtaining pups who will have erect ears because that's what some people seem to prefer.

Good question! There's isn't any harm in breeding different ear carriages together that I know of...you'll probably just get a mixed bag in ears with the litter. Will be interesting to see what any of the members who are breeders say about this.

Lol, I was just curious. You know how stuff just out of the blue pop up and leave you wondering? Now something else just did! Ok, I know some standards go for removal of back dewclaws. Why? How many actually do it? Lol, this is something I don't know a thing about!

Dew claws get caught in things and torn off. It is best to get them off by three days old. Its more of a health and safety issue. Now ears, it doesn't matter. There are three kinds of ears that ratties can have and all of them are acceptable. None of them is better than any other, but some may be dominant genetically to others. I have no idea about the genetics of ear carriage but as it does not matter I personally am not going to worry about it. There are other issues that are much more important and IMO it is kind of fun to find out what kind of ears the pups are going to have as they mature.
