We brought our new rat terrier puppy home yesterday. Her name is Sidney; she's about nine weeks old.  I've been scouring the web for training advice since then.  We're crate training her.

Based on what I've read, I've come up with the following schedule for her (below).  This works with our schedule as well, and we're going to try to follow this as closely as possible, adjusting as she grows and learns.

I'd like your thoughts on this schedule--does it seem reasonable for her? Any comments are appreciated.  Thanks!

Brian

First: Welcome to you and Sidney. We must see pics, of course!!!

Congratulations on your new addition! How/why did you come to get a rattie. Any other pets/family members. If you've been reading here, you know we want to know - LOL!

The schedule above looks pretty good. I highly recommend crate training. Daisy - my 17 mo. old rattie - was the first dog I've ever used a crate with, and it made housetraining and assimilation into our family much easier, IMO.

The only thing I can think of in addition: A pup can only realistically be expected to "hold it" for 1 hour for each month of age + 1 hour, so at 9 weeks, Sidney "should" be able to hold it for 3 hours. I would recommend that you set your alarm clock throughout the night for a while so that you can take her outside to eliminate periodically through the night so she doesn't accidently go in her crate.

Also, do you know to use a small crate or block off a larger one so that it is ONLY big enough that she can turn around and lie down in it, thus helping her learn to hold it because dogs do NOT want to potty where they sleep?

Other than that, I'd recommend keeping track on paper of the exact times you feed/water her and when she goes potty #1 and #2, then you'll get a good idea of what her schedule is, which may be different from the one you have know.

Good luck and don't forget to share some pics and please stick around and post often - anywhere and everywhere. We love active members

I have two girls and I promised them a dog a couple of years ago. They reminded me often, but they weren't ready until now. They're now 7 and 8.

We looked at several breeds--my wife wanted a toy, but I didn't want a dog quite that small. Somewhere on the internet I happened across a picture of a rat terrier, and after a little bit of research I knew that a rat would be perfect for us.

I'd been scouring the internet daily looking for a breeder with puppies that was somewhat close to us--I couldn't find one. On my way out the door one day I took one last look on Puppyfind.com and the first puppy that showed up was in New York. I'm in Pittsburgh, and a quick Google Map search showed that the breeder was only about 3 1/2 hours away. We got on the phone with her, found out that she had puppies that had just become ready to adopt, and after several pictures and phone calls, we decided on her. We had her the next morning, and she's been fantastic.

She's named after Sidney Crosby--my family is hockey crazy.

I did read about the importance of the crate size. We bought one that she'll grow into, but I'm going to divide it to fit her at her current size. So far she's been very good about using it--she slept well through the first night with a couple of wake-ups for bathroom breaks.

I'm thinking of training her to use a bell to let us know she has to go. We live just off the street, so she has to go down through the basement and out the back to get to the yard. I'm going to put the bell at the top of the basement steps. I feel that the bell is less open to interpretation--a ring should be a clear sign that she has to go.

I made a sheet (as you suggested) to keep track of her schedule. I'm optimistic that the family can stick to it and we can train her properly.

I'll post some pictures soon. My kids took a bunch & I have to get them off of the camera. Thanks for the reply, and I'm always open to suggestions and advice!

Thanks,

Brian

OMG! She's gorgeous!!! I'm glad to see you are so dedicated to getting her well-trained A few members here have used the bell technique, but be forewarned - these dogs are very smart and quickly seem to learn to ring the bell just to go outside, whether to potty or just because they want to play LOL!!!

We have another relatively new member here from Pittsburgh. I'm near Steubenville, OH, and Pittsburgh is considered "our" big city. Love the 'Burgh, the Steelers, etc...

Welcome again. It's nice to have another member who'll use the word yinz

Welcome Bmears and Sidney. Oh man is she cute as pie.

I am so impressed with your schedule. As a new dog owner, you ROCK!!

Hey, I'm in Pittsburgh too by way of NYC!

I always use a crate and it really helps, really!
One thing you should know, if you crate Sidney at 9pm, she may not be able to hold it until 7:30 am. That's almost 12 hours and near impossible for a pup.

I recommend, if someone is up later, that you take her out as late as possible and then crate her for the evening. Try to keep to your schedule as best you can. Consistency is key with pups, as well as the kids LOL.

BTW, where are you located in Pitt...I'd love to meetup, so the pups and kids can play (we have a 3 year old toddler)

I neglected to put that in the schedule, but we do get her up several times during the night to take her out. And so far, she's done very well. No accidents at night and she's slept quitely both nights.

I'm east of Pittsburgh, near Monroeville.

Another question--we're training her to go outside (and tell us when she needs to go). We do have newspaper down in the house, but she really hasn't used it, and I don't feel like I should encourage her to. I think it sends mixed signals--'should I go inside or outside?'. Would you agree that I should remove it altogether?

Welcome!!

Yes i feel that it is much more concrete to just avoid the paper in the first place. I would only use it if you intend for her to go always inside. You want to imprint that it is not good to potty in the house anywhere. Also I would put the crate in your bedroom so you hear if she wakes up.

Yes, if you want her to be a dog that only potties outside you should forego the paper altogether. It will just confuse her. Sounds like you're doing really well. She should catch on pretty quick.

We're neighbors. We're in Penn Hills.

@ the newspaper training - I have heard that you shouldn't use it, for the reason you gave. I have just stuck with crate training for years and never bother with the paper. I've heard that once they start going in the house, regardless to the using paper, they have a hard time un-learing not to go in the house.

Crate Training worked great for our little guy. He is almost 5 months old and by using the crate training we rarely have an accident.  Sometimes our little pup gets to playing too hard and has an accident but he gets better and better. But I owe all of our success to Crate Training.  Your schedule looks great. We never had anything on paper but we kept the same schedule based on our work schedule every day and it has been a great success.

I would not feed her in the crate. Pups are messy and eating where they sleep just doesn't seem sanitary.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Sidney is sooo adorable!
We've trained Bandit to use a little bell at the door & it was pretty easy. Just ring it every time you use the door yourself & they'll figure it out quick. This is a very smart breed I'm finding (this is my first rattie). I would recommend though that you put an elimination time right after big playtimes as pups (IME) usually have to go after waking, eating, and excitement/activity. The crate has worked really well for Bandit. I got him one that would fit his adult size & he's been sleeping through the night in it without complaint since I brought him home at 8 weeks. The first night I slept on the couch next to it & from then on he's been fine all by himself. Best of luck to you!!

We just purchased a 12 week old male Rattie 2 days ago. Your schedule is helpful. I am usually home so I will have him out of the crate more often than you though!! I plan to follow a "modified" version of your schedule!! Thanks for the info., very helpful.
