My husband insists that Wolf is the most selfish dog he's ever met. He's sure the dog only cares about himself. I insist he's simply an active little terrier and hasn't settled down enough for the caring/sharing stuff. Yesterday turned out to be a true test for my little doggie man.
Saturday I went to the mall to shop and then join a friend for a movie and dinner. It was a nice, relaxing fun day. When I got on the bus to return home (our van was in the shop), I was patting myself on the back for all running so smoothly. It didn't even cross my mind that the driver was running late and apparently too busy to secure my chair. The first left turn he made, my chair fell over on its side, spilling me out. My very hard head bounced at least three times, and my arm had some pretty serious abrasions. 911 had to be called because I couldn't get back in my chair. I was miserable but at least my chair was operational, except for the armrest being broken, the little thingy that keeps the power cable attached to the joystick cracked and the fastener that keeps all the power cables secure was gone.
Wolf didn't pay me any attention when I came home. No sympathy from him.
Then yesterday my son and I were speeding through Wal-Mart's parking lot when the chair went dead., thanks to the iffy connection due to the pounding the chair took on the bus. When it stopped, I kept going and landed on the 115 + degree blacktop. I freaked because it was hot. Luckily, there were guys doing construction work who came over and helped me back in my chair. This time I was sure I had broken my leg. I couldn't leave my son at the store, so we made it home. The chair blinked out a couple more times, but we were going less than 1 mph so I didn't get pitched out.
Once home I called 911. I was crying because I was in pain. Charles was crying because he was freaked out. Wolf was in his crate, looking back and forth between us frantically. When the firetruck and ambulance arrived, he started howling, which turned into a bark when the house was filled with big men and their equipment. My son and my neighbor sat with Wolf the whole time.
I got home five hours later with a very bruised, but not broken, knee and some second degree burns on the back of my legs. When I came in the door, Wolf jumped out of my son's arms and ran over to me. He was all concerned with his ears pinned back and the whites of his eyes showing. He frantically sniffed and licked and wanted to be petted. I said to my husband, "See, Wolfie does care about me." My husband shook the bag holding our dinner. Wolf's ears shot back up and he looked at me like, "Do I smell burgers and fries???" Then he was off like a shot, doing ballet in an effort to get a fry. My plight completely forgotten.
Okay, is he a sharing/caring canine or completely selfish??? |

| Oh my you poor Honey!! Hope your ok today! Was wondering the same thing about the bus having insurance to fix or replace or wheelchair? I agree about the dogs and food. Reggie is my Hubby's Service Dog and he is trained and still has problems when food is involved. When we ride on an airplane [he is a 100# Lab] we are often squished in a row of seats with him at our feet. Whenever there was food served he would find a way to hit my leg with his paw..now his Dave's mine!! Needless to say he didn't get any!! |

Wow, I'm so sorry you went through all that! The bus company should definitely take responsiblity there. As for dog's loyality - I'm afraid most of our dogs would go for the food - at least he checked to make sure you were ok first! |

| Wow, you've had a rough few days! I hope you get to feeling better soon. I think Wolfie was obviously concerned about you, as he rushed right to you to check you out. |

My gosh, two falls? I'm so sorry about your accidents, and the burns must be awfully painful. See, you're hubby doesn't know what he's talking about. Your rattie loves you and was worried about you...maybe hubby is a wee bit jealous *opps, did I say that out loud?* |

| OMG!! I am so sorry about your falls. I hope that you are starting to recover and feel a little less sore. As far as Wolf goes, Max is the most loving, loyal doggie that any mommy could ask for................until you bring out food!!!!! Then it's all about the food! LOL |

So, the stereotypical male would be your hubby, right? The one who got jealous of the dog and purposely distracted him? Of course Wolfie cares- he barked at the big scary 911 guys, trying to protect you, and ran over first thing when you got back. Sorry you had such a rough week, hope you heal up quickly. |

Thank you for all your messages. I'm still pretty sore but have pain pills that make me happy. In order to get the bus company to pay for my chair repairs, I have to go through their office of risk management and fill out tons of paperwork. When I spoke to them, they said that drivers not securing wheelchairs and having the occupants fall is not at all uncommon. I need to start bugging people about putting signs up in the buses warning those in wheelchairs that this could easily happen. Although I feel like I've been hit by a bus, I'm pretty sturdy. I can't imagine what the same accident would do to someone who isn't as durable. And yes, I think hubby is a bit jealous. When Wolfie was really little, he saw Wayne as the alpha and kissed butt. Now, not so much. Husband just can't get it through his thick skull that ratties are different than German Shepherds. Ratties have way more attitude and are much more stubborn. Wolf goes nuts when Wayne comes in and wants a pet, but after the initial greeting, Wolf doesn't interact with him much. Kim |

| Don't you think that paperwork is a deterrant? I would take the time, they should have to pay, not get people to back off cause of aa the trouble to fill it all out! |

| do the paperwork then complain, I think that the paperwork is just to keep people from filing complaints too. There are laws about wheelchairs on busses and IMO you should mention that fact to the managers/office staff at the company. An unsecured wheel chair can kill the ocupant if they are frail and a fall like that... well I would talk to a lawyer. Quite a few have no pay consulting for handicapped people. |
