Hey!  I'm going to be creating a website and I was hoping you might have a suggestion.... I'm going to create a sort of classifieds type of site.  Kind of the same idea as craigslist... but with a different theme and look.  Where users can post freely with a description and pic, and then anyone interested can email them.

I know I'm going to need to use PHP or SQL or something to create it with.  However I'm not familiar with anything but HTML and Javascript!  So I was hoping you might have a thought into what might be a good direction for me to start researching...

Thanks!!!

You don't just sit down and create a complicated application like that.
Nix the Javascript - you don't want an app built with that. PHP is HOT, and works in conjunction with SQL to create a database driven site.

Please, don't take this the wrong way, but a craiglist type site is a HUGE, giganornmous endeavor. I doubt that one, individual person coded the entire app. There are often teams of developers that work on various tasks, but there is a lot of planning involved. Planning for an application can be as extensive as developing a corporate building structure.

With all of that said...keep in mind, that you can have the most kick-butt site alive, but getting traffic to come is another beast, altogether.

Also, why don't you just get some freeware, or buy an app to customize?
However, keep in mind that you really need to know how to code to customize pre-existing apps. There are tons of applications available; almost anything you're considering creating already exists, you just have to customize it.

Excellent Point!

You can usually find such applications on tucows.com and a few other similar sites.

Good points all of them nycmom but I'm afraid you'll dash kim's hopes and she'll give up without starting! kim, you are extremely talented and with this whopper of an idea you came up with, I know you can do this. certainly it will be smaller than craiglist but gee... so are we as a group and what kim is trying to do can benefit us all here as well as our ratties! I also know some java and html, but don't know these bigger programs

if you're still up for it kim, I'll help in any way I can!

p.s. nycmom, you saw her posts about starting a thrift store or exchange on here?

p.s.s. Mornin' Mic!

No...I missed the thread. I'll go take a look.

I wasn't trying to thwart anyone's enthusiasm, just being a typical IT person
If she's looking to just get a shopping cart on here, that's easily handled. I've got an app somewhere that I'm sure will work, just have to dig it up.

Oh don't worry, no one has put me off of the idea... I'm actually more intrigued! I love a challenge Actually, yesterday I was checking for open sources and looking at hotscripts. (I love that site!) So I know this isn't going to be an easy task, which is why I was looking for some direction or the off chance that someone out there in rattie-land might by some way off chance would already have a pre-existing script... But the site I want to create is going to be small... teeny tiny compared to craigslist. I was just throwing craigslist out there as an example of the format... (buyer emails the sender and they set up the rest from there). I think I may have over-exagerated the site a bit So if anyone has suggestions, I will glady take em'! And I'm going to check out cnet in a moment!
I've actually done a little PHP and like it a lot more than JavaScript... so at the moment that's where I'm searching

oh, and Mic says hello to all! **coughing**

I don't know if there's a free version of this, but someone recently mentioned this one to me:
http://www.phpfreaks.com/script/view/959.php

I haven't looked at the code, so I cannot tell you if it's clean, commented and easy to customize, but if you're already dabbling with PHP, you should be fine. Some apps are written so poorly, without any logic, it's almost impossible to decipher, but you should be fine.

There's another app that I think would be good, but I cannot remember the name of it. When I dig it up, I'll let ya know.
