So I've been wondering, where do you all keep your treats when your not doing a training session? The reason I ask is because I just read MB's thread on the water bottle and Nora's response was every time he got quiet to the no bark command, give them a treat when they are quiet. So when you are not specifically in a training session, what do you do? Do you just always keep treats in your pocket? Because if you say "no bark" or whatever other command, and they respond the way you want them to... what if you don't have a treat on hand? If I run to the cupboard that will distract Mic and ruin the whole command I just did... won't it? Does that make sense?
When I keep the treats in my pocket, I have to double baggie, wrapped in napkins, de-smellified and Mic can still smell them.... So how do you guys do it? |

| I can't keep treats in my pockets either. Lucy is stick her entire head in my pocket and attack until she gets them. I just keep them in a jar in the kitchen. My trainer had told us to hide them around the house, but that also never worked for me because she would find them. Hopefully someone else will have a better idea. |

Ah, yeah, good question! If I run to the treat cupboard every time Skipper barks at Yoda then he will actually learn that if he barks at the cat I will get him a treat. Guess I'll have to keep some in my pocket....except that they will smell them there and pester me.

Yeah, the treat in the pocket was a failure for us when we tried it. He would try to get his head in there and when we would make him stop he would just sit there and cry like he was dying! Or worse yet he would stare... literally just sit there and stare at you, no blinking! I hate that! The only time treats in the pockets work is outdoor training... |

| It works ok outside for teaching them to "sit", etc. but I don't know how to treat him for not barking at the cat....and do I treat all of them for stopping the barking if they are all barking? Hmmmm....does Nora make housecalls? LOL |

Ok... maybe I'm the crazy one, but I walk around the house 80% of the time with treats/kibble in my pockets. Oftentimes, I'll give a command on the spur of the moment... for example sometimes when I'm washing dishes and the dogs are not in the kitchen. I'll holler "COME" and they all come running. I reach in my pocket and give them each a treat. Or if I'm sitting in the recliner and I say "UP" and Bailey jumps up in my lap. I reach in my pocket and give him a treat. If I'm walking down the hall... I put my hand down and say "TOUCH"... and Bailey regardless of where he is comes running and touches my forefinger. I reach in my pocket and give him a treat. These are NOT training sessions. These are impromptu reinforcements... and they are invaluable. They teach a dog that the dog is to mind when NOT in a training session... but just in everyday life. I sometimes have stringed cheese in my pocket. I sometimes just have kibble... I sometimes have freeze dried chicken... none of these things smell.
You don't want your dog to obey your commands only when in a training session. A dog will quickly recognize and learn about training sessions. "If I do this, I get a treat" "If I do that I get a treat"... but to get the dog to obey the same command in a different environment under different circumstances is very key to a dog's training.
I've been known to stick treats (kibble) in my bra if I have no pockets. Call me crazy... but it works. I don't have them ALL the time, but I do most of the time. The dog doesn't know when I do and when I don't... especially if I'm busy doing something else such as laundry, or dishes, or changing sheets on the bed. The dog may be laying in his/her bed... or even in a different room... an IDEAL time for an impromptu command. |

| Ok, I will try that thanks! String cheese, kibble, or freeze dried chicken. Got it! It's funny how many little questions like this I think up sometimes that can really end up making a big difference in Mic's behavior. |

I've been known to wash treats too! LOL (no one is perfect, right? haha) The freeze dried chicken... they are about the size of a quarter. They are made by Smokehouse and come in a bag. They are 100% chicken... they don't melt or crumble... they can be broken in half for smaller pieces. They can be purchased at PetsMart. GREAT to keep on hand and in your pockets! |

Yes! Emma and Apollo LOVE those! Those are just about the only treats I give them. They get to have milkbones though. But that's it.

| we keep treats all over the house and always in reach. If no treats happen to be available, we reinforce with verbals, petting, game of tug, or any positive attention. While not as good as a treat, it is effective. |

| Absolutely re: toys! If your furbaby has a toy he/she is absolutely obsessive about (with Bailey, it's his air kong)... that works too! Some dogs are more toy driven that food driven... |

Maybe I am old school but find using treats and high praise work hand in hand. When I am working on a new command, I will do it anywhere in the house or outside. This way the "training" session is integrated wherever Smokey is at the time. I give him the treat and pet and praise him. Once he seems to have the command down, I sometimes don't give the treat and just praise. I have found that this works good because he doesn't "hound" me for a treat. Example...with the "sit" command, he sometimes walks up to me from the other room and just sits down, stares, then paws me. His attitude is, "hey, I'm sitting, where is my treat"! Soooooo, now who is giving the command - see what I mean? By moving from the treat to the pat on the head or voice praising he has been more apt to follow the command just because I have told him to do it and he has become more accepting. At first, when he just gets the praise he looks at me and demands the treat. I just feel that doing it this way, he will become more obedient and less demanding for the reward. Works for me. |
