I need some serious help! And no, its not that  I am a lunatic or insane!

I have just reently gotten a female RT puppy, as some of you might know. Prior to her arrival, I had a Turkish Van Cat and knowing that the cat dosn't like dogs, I have had a friend to keep Split( my cat) until the puppy is settled in with me and the rest of my gang. Now I know the puppy has been raised around cats, the breeder has like 3 but this cat somehow LOATHES dogs!

My other RTs have encountered the cat and it wasn't pretty( I got the cat after the bigger RTs went outside and somehow, the cat escaped out of the window) And that experience changed their outlook on cats.....as I have said, they have been raised with cats but Split changed that! Now that chase anycat within a miles radius! I eventually had to give away a Norweign Forest kitten away because of their antics.

My friend has to leave and don't won't to leave Split by herself and so in two days I will be getting Split back.I have my puppy indoors because she is too small for all the time outdoors and so now I have a dilema on my hands.

I don't want to confine the cat to just one room, or the puppy. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? How do I approach this?

again, I am afraid of cats, so you don't want my answer.  Good Luck, though.

When I first got Cookie one of my cats wouldn't come out of hiding for like 3 weeks. Now they are best friends. My other cat, JT, HATES Cookie. He will give her the "death" stare and then they will start fighting. At first it scared me to death...but now I just let them work it out on their own. The worse thing that has happened is either Cookie or Jt will get a scratched ear or neck every once in a while. Really they only fight when I'm home...they both try to get my attention and it's a jealousy thing.

I go through this constantly. Cats, regardless to their specific breed, just protect their territory.
They are usually a little more subtle when they recognize that someone else was there first, but
in this case Splt wantes to make it known that it's HER house and puppy has to go.

What always works for me, is bringing the new animal home, letting it walk around the entire house,
as to let our cat have a wiff, when it suits her. I leave the puppy in the crate, in a common "pet area"
where the cat can still get a wiff, but not bring harm to the new pet.

Our recent introduction was particularly challenging, as this cat was one that I got back from my young niece.
She had not been around dogs, with the exception of our visits, and although we had two other dogs when
Penny came home, this kitty was not too keen on someone moving in on her territory.

A week later, they are not sleeping in the same bed, but they are definitely aware that the other exists
and the cat is no longer hiding under the stairwell.

Keep your puppy crated, for it's own protection, until you get the since that Split is warming up.
A cat could easily rip a young pup to shreds.

thanks joyluvsratties

My Split is sweet as can be until it comes to dogs! She is a very beautiful cat though! Off the subject here, but why are you afraid of cats? If you don't mind me asking?.... When I was three, I was a big dog lover back then too! I was feeding my mom's boyfriend pitbul and my hand got in the way and suddenly a massive pit bull was on me,( I was small back then) and I ended up in the hospital with some serious stich work needed. Everyone thought I wouldn't like dogs anymore, that I would be scared how wrong they were! Shortly after I was released, we were back at her bf house and there I went, to the dog( Spike was his name, he die at the ripe age of 15 years...) playing with hiim! He really was a sweet dog....except when he is eating, of course! My mom's BF was soo mad at that dog, that he was going to shoot it( hey its not the dog fault, it was mine because I wasn't watching my hand...what do you expect from a 3 year old?) but his brother stopped him. Actually Spike a few years later came to my resscue when I was about 5 or 6. My mom and I were walking down the alley, going to her BF house, when this white dog,( maybe shepherd mix) jumped the fence and attacked my mom, who was pregnant with my younger sister(almost due). I screamed and ran towards her BFs house and all of a sudden, when I approached his yard, Spike came tearing down the allley, dragging his heavy, thick, supposed to be unbreakable steel chain. The white dog had my mom down on the alley ground when Spike came tearing into the other dog. That is my first ever dog fight I have ever seen. So gory. Her bf came running, wondering why Spike had gone off too and came upon the two fighting dogs. The police was called and both dogs were taken in to be tested for Rabies. Spike and the other dog came home, the other dog's owner had a warning, as did Spike. A few years later the city had the white dog put down because of another attack.

Well, anyway, my sister and mom both owe their life( I believe) to that dog. One of the best dogs you could ever have. I have only had one pit bull, it was from Spike and like his father, he ended up saving me( gee, i was stupid back then!) but thats another story.

I don't dislike cats, I'm just afraid of them.  Nothing happened to me, I just have bad memories from childhood.  A neighbor had a bunch of cats and they would always fight...there would be screaming and blood from the cats.  And if ya know me, I HATE fighting and I hate blood...so I feel the same way about boxing as I do cats.  Now if it's a house cat that has been de-clawed (I don't know if that's a word) and it doesn't look at me like a piece of tuna fish, then we're fine.

I can't believe you overcame the pit bull situation.  You must be very strong emotionally to be able to deal with that!

thanks for your advice everyone! I will get a crate, which would be better, a plastic or wire? I had a wire one long time ago, but when I gave my Racal away, the crate and his acessories went with him.

No other advice really except please supervise them. Usually a cat scratch is no big deal BUT if they get an eye that puppy's eye could be lost.

On the fear note: my daughter was raised around animals from the first, when she was 6 was bitten badly by a German Shepherd (he was chained by the playground, constantly teased, she saw him twisted up in his chain one day and tried to help him). Anyway, she was taken by ambulance to the hospital, still has scar from it BUT she was never scared of dogs after that....she understood why it happened and became more cautious about her actions with new animals but never scared.

Now, cats? Frankly I'm just tired of the poop and pee in the house (i.e. litterbox). Anyone want a couple of cats? LOL

Oh. My aunt is allergic to cats and I've a funny story to tell bout that. She was a big time animal lover when she was youngers, she says. One day when she was about 8 or 9, she and my mother, came upon a black and white "kitten" and suprisely this "kitten" didn't make her sneeze! So she took it home to show Papa and Mama her new "kitten". Only Papa and Mama were suprised and quickly grabed the "kitten" out of her hands. She started to cry and said " I want my KITTEN!" . Papa and Mama explained to her that it wasn't a kitten....it was a SKUNK! She had found a skunk kit! They took it up to a vet and had it descented( did you know that some people keep skunks as pets, only they descent them, and in most states its harder to keep a skunk as a pet, harder then keeping a ferret?).

My cat isn't declawed( yes, its a word) but I do keep her nails trimed( by the vet, not me). My cousin who don't like cats, actually like her! I think the only reason I overcame the pitbull situration is because for one I was so young, and two, I loved animals soo much before it .

Sadly, I do know of some people who were young that were attacked by a dog, it were my cousins, Katrina and Briana. Just recently I have posted a picture of Katrina because she got stung in the mouth by a bee. It happened on Halloween night and they with their parents were trick or treating and a large dog( don't know the breed, cuz I wasn't there) came crashing through a screen door of a house and attacked both girls. Katrina was 4 and Briana 2. Both haven't really recovered from the attack, though they are making progress.

Both girls LOVE my Rat terriers, especially the puppy! They are fine with my small dogs( 3 rts and one westie) but don't have anything to do with my Newfoundland,Sirius, not yet anyway. We are slowly working on that. They, as of now, admire him from afar, him in fence, them outside of fence.

LOL! Mitzy Mom! I had a Noregin Forest cat, before Split, who actually taught my shiba inu puppy to use the litter box! Monkey see, monkey do! When the puppy got bigger, she went outside! Now only if Sheba could have taught the cat to go out! Sadly, I don't have neither Forest nor Sheba anymore. Sheba got hit( on the side walk, next to me!) It was hit and run accident, and instantly killing her. I was devesated over her loss... Forest lived to be about 9 years then passed away one night. For a while there, I had no cat nor dogs. Then I said to my self, why ? So I looked for a new doggie! And cat!

That is funny about the skunk!  Did they keep it?

Yeah, if I'm in a house with cats and if you swear to me that the cat is nice, then I'm ok.  It's the cats that spring at you like fresh meat that I'm afraid of.  The claws, the teeth, akkk.  And the furballs, the furballs upset me as well.

I hope your cousins overcome their dog trauma as well as you did.

Get a training crate; they have pull out trays, making cleaning easier.

How big is your baby? I was just investigating crates on amazon. We got one a few years ago for $35, including shipping. I saw a place, just yesterday,  where you get pretty much the same thing from ferret.com.

The crate costs $18.99, plus shipping.  www.ferret.com/itemdy00.asp

Yes, they did end up keeping the Skunk and guess what she named it? Kitty!  She had it well into her teens, I forget what age she was that it died. I know it live at least a good ten years. I feed Split Iams, as was recomended by the vet, I had her on Science Diet but the vet said that she would be best on Iams. I have some stuff that I give her for the furball and some kitty breath mints!

I hope that they get over the dog trauma as well. Katrina was the first to let one of my RTs close to her. Up until about a year ago, she didn't like any dogs near her. Then on Fourth of July( of 2006) I had my Bambi with me, and he was sitting next to me, watching the display and Katrina sat warily on the other side of him and began tenatively petting him. Bambi didn't do anything, didn't move closer to her or anything. And so she began petting him eagerly. All this time, he sat still as a rock, facing forward. Gradually, after that fist petting, she got closer to Bambi and eventually ran up to him on sight! She was ;probably more devesated then me when Bambi was stolen, she loved that dog dearly, I was on the verge of giving him to her for a christmas present because a kid would be good for a dog! Sadly, he was never recovered. Anyway, when I got my other RTs, they reminded her of Bambi and her favorite RT of now, is of course, my new puppy!

Briana really didn't get over her shyness of dogs until I got my puppy about a week ago. Now she approaches my other RTs and westie, they just love my RTs but Briana's favorite other then the puppy, is Jt(my westie). So hopefully with a little help from everyone(the family is doing their best) and my dogs, maybe they will get over their fear!

Ok, this will sound stupid, I don't know how big she is, she is an 8wk old puppy, so I would say small, but I though about getting a medium crate so maybe when she's older, she will be able to use it. . I have pictures of her.

My cats in the house are a different story then the cats outside. My dogs know they need to respect the cats inside or deal with me. Outside Ralph TRIES chasing cats like he wants to kill them. But inside he knows better then to touch pets. I would introduce the cat eariler then later. I doubt a girl will be as bad as a boy. We got Ralph when we had a kitten he was thinning her tail out. I bet your puppy will try to make friends with the cat

Noooo, that doesn't sound stupid at all. I tell you what. If there's a Petco, or similar near you, take her and see what size she fits in. She's 8 wks; you want to allow for growth, but at the same time, you don't want to give her too much room, as she'll end up going potty at the far end of the crate, and sleeping at the other end (Penny is doing that now).

Some crates come with dividers, to accomodate growth, however I don't think that the one I recommended does. If you'd prefer one with a divider, check amazon.com for Life Stages, model # 1624. I'm going to have to buy a new divider, which is darned near as expensive as a new crate
