I'm so excited. We're going as a family, to Penny's first day in obedience class.

I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm sure Penny will do better than I will

Oh how fun!! I've always wanted to take my babies to obedience classes but never seem to have the time. You usually have to go the same night every week right? (Like every Tues. for 6 weeks) and with my kids being so busy I never know when I'll have a free night...heck I can't even get on rt.com until after 11pm most nights!

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

I am so glad that you decided to enroll her. You both will have so much to learn from the class and from each other. The trainers are always a good resource and Penny will get to socialize with other doggies. Where are you going??

Yes, you have to commit to going the same time each week, for the length of the class. I needed to do this, because we're getting another one and I've been looking at my history of having "nice" but non obedient dogs.

We went to Splash 'n Dash K9 Sports, in Plum PA. It was only 4.5 miles from us and was a wonderful experience.

Penny, was of course the smallest in class. There was a Shepherd, a Boxer/Newfoundland mix and a JRT. They were all 4 months old and Penny, was the old maid at 5 months. There were three trainers in the class, one teaching and the other two participating with their pups. So, we got lots of help.

One pointed out that Penny was very, very scared that she will probably come out of her shell, but she taught us how to use treats as a way to gain her trust and how to move Penny to a place she felt unthreatened in.

I was really happy that we used clickers, and that everything that I'd been reading in my books was right in sync with the class. This is going to be a great experience for all us.

Haha...how did you know?

1. Practice targeting, using a lid

2. Focus - this one I'm having a little problem with. I have to hold a treat next to my treat and get her to look at me.
