How do i get Topper from eating out of the litter box? I have tried a different style of litterbox but the cats wouldnt use it, I also put a baby gate up but the cats wont jump over it most of the time and peed/pooped on the floor.  I caught him today and got mad and spanked him before my brain kicked in.  I dont believe in spanking.  Nothing has helped thus far.

Help!

This is a tough nut to crack. A lot of dogs have a real fondness for "kitty kruncies". I eliminated it by utilizing a small storage closet off my laundry area. I installed a kitty door in the door to the closet and put the litter box in there. Daisy will not go through the little kitty door - she could if she tried as the cats are about the same size as she is, but I think it scares her.

Short of doing something like that, I'm not sure what to tell you. This might be a situation where the squirt water bottle might work. But you will have to keep a constant eye on him and the water bottle on hand so that when he gets close to the litter box, you time the "squirt" just right.

I had the same problem and I have a soloution!!!  I was going to buy a very expensive littler box that had a lid and the cats would have to go through a hole on the lid and drop down into the litter box.  I thought that my oldest kitty would never go for it, so I made my own.  I bought a rubbermaid (sterilite) type container with high sides.   I bought the 18 gallon container in a heavy plastic, not the clear ones.  I was going to put the lid on it and cut out a hole for the cats, but it works perfectly without the lid.  Tinkerbelle does not jump into the container, but the cats have no problem with it.  I put them in it the first time, so they would know it was their litter box and that's all it took.  It cost me about $5 and the one at Petsmart was about $50.  Hope that works for you!

I keep our litterbox blocked off from the dogs but the cats can get to it. Usually cats will get to the litterbox where ever it is unless they don't know where it is or they are too scared to get there.

They have those kitty condo litterboxes, but I think a dog could still get in if it really wanted to, and if they are picky about going into different kinds that probably wouldn't work (the ones with the little stairs that swirl up into the litter area). We used to put the cats food on top of the dryer but a litter box might be a little precarious up there.

I heard it called "Kitty Roca" the other day, funny but ewww.

Good luck! I will be going through the same thing I imagine when I get a kitty, as Yogi has a fondness for other dog poop already.

Thanks for the Idea Tinkerbelle. You and I must think alike, because I had already done that with one of my moving totes since my one cat kept peeing over the side of the old litterbox. I do admit that Topper cant get in it, but the cats wont use that one. Since I am in an apt, I cant put in cat doors....

I just read on another forum that there is some stuff you can add to your pet's food from the vet called "Forbid" that is supposed to deter dog's from eating cat poop and doesn't affect the cat.

Thought of this thread when I read that, may be worth looking into!

My pup does the same thing. But what we did is put meat tendorizer on the cat food and when the cat eats it his/her poop will have a bad oder and the dog will not eat it. This is also the same for dogs who eat there own poop. Give it a try...

Wow, never heard of that. I never buy tenderizer, but I will just for that purpose. Thx!
