I've heard that some areas have thrift stores where all the proceeds go to pet rescue and spay and neuter programs.  Just wondering if anyone has one in their area?

I think that's a really great idea!

I would love a pet thrift store! I love going to thrift stores, I find the greatest deals sometimes!!

Plus I have a sweater just sitting in Mic's "closet" that doesn't fit him anymore. I need to get rid of it and a thrift store would be perfect, I just can't stand the thought of throwing it out.... or hey, does anyone's puppy need a sweater??

Sarah - the Memphis Humane Society used to have a thrift store at it's old location.  I'm not sure if the new one in Shelby Farms has one

Ya know, I re-read Sarah's post... and I think I mis-read. It was about a thrift store that sends the proceeds to pet rescue! Doh! My bad! But I've never heard of any thrift stores in our area that do that. That would be a great idea though.

There is one here for the Humane Society. I think there is one in St. Pete for the SPCA. It's a great way to help, even if you don't shop there, you can donate your things to sell.

We have one in Ellsworth, Maine (about 15 miles from me), it is a clothing only store and certain items (about 1/3 to 1/2) are marked specifically that purchase will be donated to an animal rescue organization in our area. I love this store anyway, they take in nice things and everything is clean and I love that they donate part of their proceeds to animal rescue.

kim, that's brilliant! we could swap items, donate, make puppy bling etc. trade recipies like paul's peanut butter bones.. that's a cool idea. i ran a seed exchange for years and it was basically a group of online friends world wide sending each other plant seeds. same idea could work here... wish lists, items we have but don't use..

as for the humane society thing, we have one 7 miles away, it's neat. they have animal items as well as used clothes and things. their adoption center is right next door. I made arrangements for shiloh's fix there.

There is one here that supports a local animal shelter called Animal Ark. Its in the bad part of town so I dont stop by there often.

If anyone has a winter coat for Topper that they dont need, he is looking for one. Toppers a bigger rattie, so maybe like a Med/Large?? I am guessing.

Ok, I've been going over the idea of a pet thrift store/exchange type of website with Kevin and he thinks its a great idea! He said I can use his host, he has lots of free space. Plus he has one free domain name left so if we can think of a name for the site, I can see if its taken and register it! OOHH this is fun I'm going to start thinking of ideas for the site and start creating it! If anyone has any ideas, please let me know or pm me!! I was thinking of setting it up kind of like craigslist, but a little nicer (since I like graphic design ) or something like that, I don't know... I'm just thinking out loud

Ladyfern ~ Kevin was involved with a vegetable seed exchange last summer! Those are so fun! We got some really exotic veggies, although some never made it being in the wrong climate, but it was still fun

We do have a Humane Society thrift store here and all profits go to it, where I donate my old clothes to... Our HS got into trouble this past year though for flubbing their euthanization records apparently...

I think it's a great idea, too!

We had a thrift store ran by a nonkilling rescue group when I lived in New Mexico. I loved the store and to go and look at the animals. I got 2 of my dogs from them but sadly they got stolen when someone opened our gate when we were gone.  Anyway I wish we had one here. If anyone has a sweater/jacket Nibbler can wear I would pay you for it at least the shipping. He is small and I know  I am going to have a hard time finding him something. My hubby won't let me dress him up not even a bandana.
