Does anyone have TMJ?  I've had it my entire life, but I think its getting worse.  I hear this crackling noise every time I open my mouth even the slightest bit on the left side.  Of course I have been clenching my jaw when I sleep due to stress lately... So I'm hoping it will go away once I stop stressing... but man, I'm in pain!  So does anyone know anything about it?  Is this normal?  And is there anything that I, or maybe a doctor (dentist?) can do eventually to cure this?  I'm just scared it will get stuck open or closed! Could you imagine that! I think I would freak out!

I hope you feel better soon. I love all the different ways your body can react to stress.

TMJ? .does that mean "Too Much Jam"?i don't see how it could effect your jaw but it could shoot your bloodsugar up,I know from experience because i've been there and done that.

My Mom has it and she sleeps with a mouthpiece so she doesn't grind her teeth. It works really well for her but it has to be fitted to your mouth by your dentist.

your dentist can make you a night guard so that you're not clenching or grinding in your sleep, because that is what leads to the pain in your jaw. I have one, beause my jaw pops. i'm supposed to wear it at night, but I forget a lot. When i'm stressed, i clench my jaw all night long. Also, if you have it really bad, you can eventually get surgery, but that is in really severe cases. Your dentist can refer you to a specialist that only deals with neuro-muscular dentistry. its really normal, tons of people have it. So I would just make an appt, most of the time this stuff is at least partly covered by insurance. Hope you feel better!

Fellow tooth grinder here. Ice packs- 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off. You can make yourself a night guard- go to the sports section of your local Mart store and get a sports mouthgaurd- typically you drop them in boiling water to soften them up then put in your mouth to customize the fit. Don't chew gum.
I went to a chiropractor for a while, it really seemed to help.

Do you have tooth dreams when yours is acting up? I'll have nightmares where I'm biting on something so hard my teeth shatter.

YES!  I've had "shattering teeth" dreams ever since I was a kid.  It's like they are made of glass, like a light bulb, and they shatter!  I HATE THOSE DREAMS.

This is what my Chiropractor showed me to do:

First make sure you wash your hands or wear a rubber glove.
Take your first finger and put it in your mouth with the inside of your finger toward your cheek between your teeth and cheek, then close your teeth together.

Then reach way back past your teeth into the back corner and push back and outward slowly. You will actually feel the muscles release tension.  He actually will rotate his finger. It may hurt because your muscles are so sore, but it is worth it.
I will also massage the muscles in the upper part of my cheek from the inside too.
It really helps!

Another thing I learned from tv or something is to open your mouth as wide as you can and stick out your tongue and hold it for a few seconds.  It will release tension in your whole face.  It looks really funny, but it works!

Well, I do eat a lot of pb&j's

It's feeling a little better today.  Sounds like a lot of you deal with this problem too!  I am not alone!! Yeah!   I think I may try a couple of these suggestions, unfortunately I have no insurance right now so the dentist will have to wait...

I think my worst fear is my jaw locking up... Jan, OMG!  That must have been soooo scary!

I've had it for as long as I can remember. Sometimes I'll be eating or yawning and my jaw will just POP! Brad looks at me like WTH? Plus, I've had those dreams where my teeth shatter too! Scary!

When I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed (27 years ago) they overextended my jaw and gave me TMJ. Over time it did improve. I'm very careful about it still, what and how I eat, and I always remind the dentist/hygenist that I have this so that they won't make me open up to much or for too long.

Stress does make it worse.

Tracy's chiropractor advice is good, I figured this out myself and it does help.

You have my sympathies!
