Took my truck into a service place today (not the Ford dealer).  After my exciting adventure yesterday, it is running but still idling very rough. (I bought gas yesterday and within about 10 minutes my truck started running rough and died.  Randy got it started and it is now running okay, except at idle.  I put a full tank of new gas in to it today, btw.)  Anyway, my "check emissions" light is on since yesterday's event.  So, I took it in and they did the routine services, which was due, but then tried to hook their computer up to it to see what was going on with this light.  The computer would not read my truck?????  They tested their computer on other cars and it did okay, so it is something weird with my truck.  Now I am trying to get it into the Ford dealership maybe tomorrow if I can get the appt., which means another long trip.  Well, we have an extended warranty, so hopefully if something is wrong it will be covered.  Any of you ever have this experience?  Cars are so complicated now.

My last two vehicles were Fords. I didn't have that particular problem.
Not being able to get a reading is very strange.

did you gas up at a reputable place????  My husband got gas a month ago at a place off the interstate and they apparently mixed water in with the gas...bad news...had to have new engine.  It was making a loud clunking sound.

then again, your troubles may have nothing to do with the gas you put in.

now as far as the computer in your car...that happened to my car when I lived in North Carolina.  I went to have it inspected and they couldn't read it...WHATEVER...it was a Honda Accord...how many of those are floating around?  I think it was a glitch.

GOOD LUCK...from the McAlpin's....the car trouble King and Queen...we BOTH had to buy new cars last week

This is the first problem I've had with the truck - it's a 2004. I bought the gas from a Shell station, but it is in a little town (I was on the way to pick pups up from kennel) and I'm thinking since all they had was super, it might have been old. Now, that should have nothing to do with the computer problem, so it may be purely coincidence - anyway guess I'll be finding out. Ugh.

Computer sensors are becoming more and more sensitive on cars....take it to the Ford place. It could be something very minor (like water in the gas). Bill works at a Ford dealership as a warranty administrator....do you want his phone number? He might be able to help you over the phone.

My Kia's transmission is so sensitive that a little bit of road dirt can sometimes get it stuck...I have had to pull over, put it in neutral or park and then it goes back into gear and is fine.

Oh, thanks MB. I'll see what happens tomorrow at the dealership and will call Bill if I need help. This dealership has always been great - it's a small town close to where Randy works and they buy all their trucks from them. We've bought several cars/trucks from them too and they are always good to us. In fact, the reason I'm waiting to see if I can get it in tomorrow is to see if they will have a loaner, in case they have to keep it. They didn't have any today. I wonder if this will be covered under extended warranty???? Hey, you could ask Bill that question! Of course, it may depend on what is wrong with it.

I had a problem exactly like that once & was told it was the filter in the fuel pump. It was replaced & a few weeks later the problem was back. As it turned out, it was the fuel pump itself. However, in this day & age it could be a number of different things, PCV problems, worn vacuum hose, bad sensor.

Yikes. It's about 50 - 60 miles to this place -- I hope I make it!

Hey Jan, just talked to Bill.  He says the emission light could mean the "o2 sensor" is bad and it could have gone bad from the bad gas!  That would be covered under extended warranty (as well as a loaner car) if you bought the extended warranty from Ford.  They will know when you take in by running the VIN number on it.  He also said that emissions problems are often covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles.

Forgot - he also said that the place that couldn't "read" your truck either had operator difficulty or their equipment wasn't up to par.  (Said something about OSI....specifications or something the code reader should have had.)

Oh, thanks MB. I just know it has to be tied in to the bad gas -- to much of a coincidence otherwise. Thanks for letting me know that. I'll keep you updated.

I agree with Jeff that your problem is that it's a FORD. Around here it's GM or nothing. Another question to ponder. Were they refilling the gas station with gas at the time? If they were it is most definately the gas because if a tanker is filling the station at the time, it works up all the shit in the tank. Anyway, good luck with everything.

well, i probably shouldn't disagree with you, but I may have to. I'm a GM employee actually, BUT, the fuel pump went out on my chevy after 62000 miles. I have driven on empty before, but I don't make a habit of it. So, I'm not to happy with GM right now!

Any model of car can start to go wrong after 5 years. I've had Fords, Chevys, BMWs, Oldsmobiles, Mercurys, etc. and it just seems that once they hit a certain parts go. The only exception to that has been KIAs - believe it or not. Maybe I've just been lucky though.

Gotta disagree with you Jeff. We've owned several Fords over the years -- my husband has driven a Ford Explorer for many many years, I've owned a Tauras, a Mercury Villager Van, and now this truck. We've never had problems with them -- and this problem was due to water in the gas tank -- I saw it today. After clearing it and changing the fuel filter it is running fine. Don't go disin' my F-150 -- them is fighting words, son!
