I have just started working on lay down with Lucy. I sit on the floor with one leg bent creating an arch, and then lour Lucy under my leg so she has to lay down then treat. We have gotten this part great. She gets the idea that she needs to go under my knee, which causes her to lay down to get her treat. That is great and all, but how do I transition her from going under my knee to actually laying down on the command of "lay down". I know we've just started, but I am looking ahead trying to figure how the heck I am going to get her to make the transition in thinking (well, obeying). If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I started out using one hand with the treat, and lowering it to the floor in front of my Lucy and telling her "down", and with my other hand would apply just enough pressure to 'remind' her that's what she was supposed to do.  This was the hardest thing to get through to her---she doesn't much care for the laying down comand!

We used the treat to the floor method with Dottie. It worked well once she realized that her "spring loaded rearend" had to be on the floor also in order to get the treat.

The "down" command is hard for some dogs to learn because it puts them in a "submissive" position and many times they rebel against that...
I train "down" the same way Paul describes...

I couldn't get her to do it that way. Having her go under my leg has been the only way she will do it. I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to get from getting her under my leg in a lay down position to getting to lay down with out going under my leg. I am going to definitely keep with it, and if or when we get it down I will let you know how I did it.

Do what works for you, Colleen.... I've done it different ways, but never that way, so sorry... I'm not much help to you on this one! Maybe someone else can lend some assistance?

She did it. She's got it now. I'm so excited. We have moved from getting the idea of the position, to now doing it from a sit with great accuracy. She can even now do it from a standing position, takes a little longer for her to realize that her butt needs to also touch the ground in this one. Seriously two days of targeting this skill and she has it. Can't wait to keep working on this so she will become proficient with lay down. She is so smart, and really wants to do what I ask of her. I could not have asked for a better dog. She is fantastic and very quick.

Congrats on learning a new command, it usually doesn't take these dogs long to learn a new trick.
The PetSmart trainer was really impressed with Dottie during our training sessions. She would ask "Have we tried with her yet?", and we would answer "No". So she would start working with her on the new command, after a couple of tries Dottie would take right to it.

The trainer thought that we were being "proud parents" when we told her that Dottie was VERY smart. After a couple of sessions she told us, "WOW! You guys weren't joking about how smart she is".

I am always amazed at how quick she picks things up. No matter how many things she knows it is always still really exciting. These little guys are just so intelligent.

Get them to sit first and then move the treat down will help. Make sure they know sit first....
