Hello and thank goodness for this web site!  We just got our pup 1- 1/2 weeks ago and she is so much fun.  However, since we got her she has been just staying close to us in the backyard, but tonight my husband took her out and she took off running for the front yard and the street.  He was able to get her back pretty quickly, but it scared him enough to come in and get the leash to try again.  We've tried the leash before and the harness, but she wants no part of it - she's terrible on either.  Is she too young/little to start her on a leash, and if not, what can we do to make her relax and just walk normally while it's on?  Thanks - this is my first time posting, I apologize if this has aleady been answered in a different posting. First: Welcome to you and Dani!!!! This site is the best

Second: She is not too young for a leash. The earlier begun, the easier it will be. She should not be outside without being on the leash if your yard is not fenced - the opportunity for disaster is just too great. And soon she will be soooo fast you will not catch her if she doesn't want you to. Trust us on this - they are FAST.

I'm assuming she's very young - maybe 9 to 10 weeks old? Make sure at first you are using a very lightweight collar and leash. She's not big enough to need much more than that. When I first brought my Daisy home she had her collar and leash on her at all times because I did not want her roaming away from me (this is a big help with housetraining) Just make absolutely sure you are always watching her in this case, as you don't want the leash to become entangled in anything and choke or scare her.

She will get used to, you just have to stick firm and not give in. She must get used to a collar/harness and a leash. Approach it as you would a small child in a car seat - there's NO getting around it. It just must be.

Congratulations on your new addition!!!!! We want to see pics, of course

Dani is so cute!
I agree with Tracey,
While you are in the house with her and can keep an eye out for tangles, let her walk around inside with the leash dragging behind her, to help her get used to it.

Absolutely Tracey is correct! Please leash train her asap, and until she learns recall... keep her on a leash unless you have a fence to keep her confined!

yup, definitely leash her asap! If pulling becomes a problem, there is a nifty little device called the "gentle lead". They hate it, but it definitely works!

good luck!

Do they really love us or are we just walking food dispensers?

Thank you to all who replied!! I really appreciate it. Dani is a real cutie and i will post a close-up picture soon.
I will give the leash indoors a try and hope for the best. Cross your fingers!!! On another note - our house has an open floor plan, so we can't gate the living room off. The problem is that Dani continually runs for the rug in the living room and will not take no for an answer. it's getting to be a full-time job making sure she doesn't run in there. I wouldn't mind, but i caught her trying to pee on that rug and I like it too much to let her get near it again. She's doing good as far as telling us she wants to go out to relieve herself, but she still has accidents, so I'm afraid she'll do it again when i'm not looking. Any advice to keep her out of that room??? THANKS!!!!! Dani's Mom (Steph)

you said..... "I'm afraid she'll do it aga in when I'm not looking." Don't give her that opportunity. Do not leave her unsupervised... if you do then you are asking for trouble. You can't correct a behavior if you don't catch her in the act. Correcting a dog 15 minutes after you've found the urine in the carpet simply won't work -- the dog won't make the connection between the behavior and the correction.

A crate will become your new best training friend! Use it! (and don't leave your puppy unsupervised... ever). Consistency won't be in the cards for a long time yet!

good luck!
Scott
