My sweet little Napoleon is scheduled to get neutered tomorrow. This house is going to be so lonely while he's not here. Fortunatey he'll be here tomorrow evening. What can I expect him to be like when I bring him home? Any ideas of how I can make the process easier for him?
Thanks!

I know how hard it is to leave them at the vet...and be home without them running around. tomorrow night and the next day, he should be pretty low energy, not wanting to do much at all. my vet sent home some paiin pills (carprophen) to use if the ratties needed it, and I did give it to them a few times the first day or 2, but after that, they were pretty much back to their normal selves...if a little slower. |

How do you know when they need it? At least with babies they cry, but what does a rattie do when he needs pain meds? |

Elisa, I give mine pain meds when I think they are in pain or as the vet directs (every so many hours). Signs of pain are shaking and whining. I normally only do it the day of and the morning after. Each rattie takes it different so just keep an eye on him. He might not be super hungry after either. We are all here to support you and Napoleon. |

He will be fine. I thought I was going to go nuts with Luke, I hated leaving him at the vet. When I was finally allowed to pick him up at 4:30 pm, I heard him scream... I said from the waiting room "Lukey, is that you?". The vet tech came out with him on his leash. The tech said that we have a "screamer". He would not go into the kennel, he did not want to come out of the kennel, he did not want to walk on the leash. He just screamed the entire time. He missed us and probably wondered why we did this to him... leaving him... Once he heard my voice, he was ok and wanted to go home. He did whimper a couple of times, but that was about it. My vet gave me a complimentary 25 mg. Rimadyl... woo-hoo! He was also chipped then too. I think the chipped area was more tender than the actual operation site. Luke was trying to run around and play as soon as he got home. It was getting difficult trying to keep him calm. We just fed him a little bit of chicken breast that night because we didn't want him getting sick from the after effects of the meds that were used on him for his surgery. So, I would suggest you get something a bit stronger from your vet, maybe something that will help/make him sleep, so he won't be as active and feed him lightly that night. The next day, Luke was fine... we still watched him and didn't want him running around doing the Rattie500 for a few days. |

I've heard some horror stories about Rimadyl when doing vet checks for rescue. So I am fearful of using that product. To be honest I just use 1/2 a baby asprin in cheese and that does the trick. And you all know how many spay/neuters I have on a regular basis!!!! |

| Leaving your baby at the vets office for a day or so will be very difficult but one of the best things you could ever do for him. IMO |

| I dunno. Our late dog Clyde was on Rimadyl, never really had a problem with it. Lest you think that the "late dog" bit is ironic, he died of a nasal tumor and would have been in agony without something like Rimadyl. |

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK! |

I think nibbler's razor rash was more painful then the neutering. He had pain pills and a topical ointment. I just followed the directions the vet gave me. One pill in the morning, one before bed then one a day for 3 days (I think). Ask your vet what he/she would recommend. The ointment worked really well and it was basically like pain relieving neosporin. I kept it to put on nibbler's cuts and scrapes now. |

The after surgery directions to keep him quiet and not allow him to play and run for 7-10 days. The only way I can keep him from playing is to sit on the couch and do nothing. Everytime I sit down, whether it be on the couch or at the computer, all he wants to do is be in my lap. Am I supposed to sit and do nothing for 7-10 days? Does anyone have any idea how impossible that is? I sat for the first couple of hours tonight, but the dishes needed to be done, I've got laundry to finish, stuff to put away. I just can't sit on the couch and do nothing. Also, I'm supposed to leash walk him instead of letting him go outside in the fenced in back yard by himself. I've tried that, but he's running and trying to get further than the leash will let him walk anyway. I don't remember having to go through all of this with our Mastif/Boxer mix when we had him neutered. |

| It is so hard to hold a rattie down!!! I am glad he is doing well after the surgery and hope you can keep him a little mellow but I don't know if it is possible with these guys! |
