Can you leave the collar on them when you leave the house? When I am home I can control Yaz's barking easily now. When we leave she STILL barks like crazy! Drives me nuts. It doens't last more than five minutes. If that. But I was wondering if a cintronella collar could help break her of the barking. Thoughts?

Sorry Amy, I missed this!  Sure you can leave it on, but it depends on how long you'll be gone.  If she only barks for 5 minutes, I wouldn't bother unless she barks incessantly.  If that's the case, I think training her and treating her for separation anxiety would work better than the collar.  She may learn that if she barks enough, the collar will run out of spray and that would ruin the effectiveness of the collar itself....

Thanks Sue. No she doesn't bark long. MAYBE five minutes. Used to be much worse. We have tried for the last two years to desensitize her to our leaving. No such luck. Way better but still not great. What I was thinking is for a week or so leaving for 15 minutes a day and then coming back. Maybe I could just break her of the barking this way?

That COULD work... but my experience is... my dogs will bark when they don't have the collar on.  I don't think it's a training tool per se... I think it's to stop nuisance barking (like mine do outside and the nasty neighbor on the one side of me B*%&#CHES), and they won't bark with the collars on, but they DO bark if they don't have the collars on...

You can try it as a training tool... I just don't know how effective it will be...

So is it more of like a mental thing then? The collar is on therefor I musn't bark? Man these dogs are funny. Hmmm.....might be worth a shot. My main thing is IF and WHEN we get another dog I don't want a chorus everytime we leave the house! My neighbors have never complained but it bothers us.

About the chorus... I have 6 that freak out... and it stops after a little while... but they're INSIDE the house - and if it bothers the neighbors, TOO BAD... they're in their own home and can do whatever they want... at least that's my theory... outside, yes, I want to control their noise level, but inside, they can go CRAZY!!
