Well, the vet confirmed that the mama & her babies all have upper respiratory infections. The little black tri/tuxedo boy is sickest - he's very close to pneumonia. Everyone has come home with antibiotics.

Sadly, Little Mama has heartworms. She also has a very bad luxation of her right patella. We were not able to confirm what's up (if anything) with her hips yet - that will take x-rays and possible sedation. Mama weighed 8 pounds, and the babies were 1.25 to 1.5 pounds each.

I know it goes without saying but I hate puppy mills! I just can't understand how anyone can treat animals in such a cruel way. It is hard enough on a female to have babies when they are healthy and robust, but can you imagine what this poor mama dog is going through.

A huge part of me wants to see the folks that ran this mill serve time in a cage off the gound, only being fed bread and water, and having to poop and pee through the bottom of the cage! see how they like it. It really makes me sick.

Caroline, I know that you will do everything in your power to get these ratties healthy and comfortable. You and they will be in my thoughts and prayers as you go through all the things you will be going through with them.

How old is this mama dog? I know several are older dogs as in 7 through 10. I am so thankful to Ratbones and all the rescues who are helping to save ratties from these puppy mills. I look at sweet Taffy, almost too plump with her eyes sparkling and her tongue hanging out as she dances and bounces around and I am so thankful she was rescued. My mom holds her in her lap every night and tells her about how she will never be cold or hungry or left alone ever again.

Hang in there and if I can help in any way, just let me know.

Aloha,
Cheryl

Needless to say I hate the puppy mills, too.  And the unqualified backyard breeders  - sometimes we forget that painful conditions like the luxating patellas are inherited and that's why testing should be done before breeding...and females should be two years old before breeding...to be these inherited conditions are passed along.  We're not just picky when we say breeders should test, wait until the dog is old enough, etc.  We don't want to see these dogs in pain!

I'm sure this little girl and her babies will get the best care available with Caroline.

Little Mama is 9 years old, according to her paperwork. She's very timid, but already starting to come to me for attention when I go into her room (the Showerstall Motel; a bathroom attached to our guest room). Her babies get very excited when they hear my voice, and even the little tuxedo baby (the one who has the worst congestion) insists on being picked up and cuddled.
When they first arrived they did not give kisses. I have never met a puppy that didn't wiggle and try to wash your whole face when you kiss on them, but these pps just didn't seem to know that behavior. Of course, now they all give great kisses, and squirm and wiggle in excitement whenever me or my husband handle them.
Don't worry - they are all on antibiotics, and will get well - I'll make sure of that!
