ERGGHHH!!!

Poor little Sophie, she was cold.  We don't have our heat turned on because it's just starting to get cold, but it is cold enough today it'd be justified... and little single coated Sophie was trembling, so I snuggled her until she warmed up.... Radar wanted to get in, but he's long furred and double coated and fine. So when I decided she was warm enough I sat up and started petting both of them and SOPHIE BIT RADAR when I petted him!!

I tapped her snout and said "NO" and then pushed her roughly aside and turned my attention on Radar... but then just got away from the dogs all together.  I got a measuring tape and came back to take Sophie's measurements because I'm goign to make her a sweater since she's cold, and Sophie rolled over on her belly and when I tried to right her, she tried to bite me!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not happy with her right now.

With all the dogs on here, I've lost track... how old is Sophie?

That's my baby girl, Bijou and her little brother Banjo, they are Toy Rat Terriers.

Sophie is five. I adopted her at the beginning of July.

I took her and Radar outside to exercise because my mom pointed out she's not been getting enough (mainly because it's cold) and they played for about five minutes, then whined to be let onto the deck (we have a little gate for the deck). And I tried to distract them throwing toys and treats out in the yard, but they wouldn't be distracted-- Radar climbed the wood gate and leapt onto the deck, so I let Sophie up... a little while later I tried to get them to go down again, and guess what? The treats I threw into the yard? The goats ate them! Ate dog dental treats! Sheesh!!

Brats. All of them. Grr. I love them though. (And Sophie didn't really try to "bite" me, she just snapped at me-- still totally unacceptable, but not vicious).

Bijou is nine months old and we are working on the "no bites, kissy-kissy" thing. She is normally very good and doesn't nip, but when she's in play mode she forgets sometimes. I really need to find her a play buddy so she can rough house. I'm thinking of advertising for one or maybe adopting another Rattie so she will have a buddy.

I'm sure Sophie was just giving you a little love bite.

Sophie does that too... and maybe with me she was doing it...

But when she bit Radar this morning, it was no love bite. It was a "HEY this is MY petting time not yours, buddy" bite. And, of course, she doesn't get to dictate who I pet.

She and Radar are friends, when it's just them. But they're both INSANELY jealous of human affection. Both are PEOPLE dogs, and Sophie especially could care less about other dogs if there is a human around.

Yeah, that's the one thing holding me back from getting a second dog. Jealousy. Bijou loves my attention, not too crazy about everyone else. She does like playing with other dogs, just not sure how she'd react to having one around 24/7.

Right now things are pretty well perfect... I hate to rock the boat and cause problems ya know?

Eh. Radar is insanely jealous, but he's ten years old and since we got Sophie he's been acting like he's six or seven. And Sophie is so jealous because she never grew up around other dogs-- it was quite obvious when we got her she'd never lived with another dog since her littermates. If she'd been better socialized with dogs, she might not be so insanely jealous-- I mean, I think she'd met other dogs before, but never lived with one...

I think that getting two dogs is great. Like I said, Radar is thriving now... yes, they're jealous, but I don't think either of them would want to get rid of the other altogether-- just when they want my undivided attention.

Could Sophie be in some sort of pain or discomfort?

how serious was the bite? I mean, was Radar hurt? if this is the first time, maybe she's not feeling well today.

Hendryx was always a mouthy dog. We just worked on bite softly at first and then progressed to no biting. He'll flash his teeth when rough housing, but he doesn't close his mouth on anybody anymore. Thank goodness. I was terrified that he would bite somebody and get killed.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Rocky likes to pretend bite. He plays with teeth bared and slobber flying, but when you stop, he will gnaw beside you and just get slobber on ya...lol. He does nip and snarl when he's really pooped out and tired and just wants to be left alone though. Not to get you, but at you so you get the point.

Radar wasn't hurt, but Sophie wasn't in pain either. I was petting Sophie-- I got to pet Radar and Sophie leans over and bites his snout-- not hard, but definately intentionally-- as if to say "GET THE HECK AWAY FROM MY MOM, I'M GETTING ATTENTION NOW". She's been bratty-- usually barking at him-- but this is the first time she's bitten. She's just exceedingly possessive.

I try to nip it in the bud when she does it-- pushing her away, ignoring her, etc-- but she just doesn't seem to connect "I bit Radar" and "Pam stopped petting me".... I'm afraid she might even be connecting "Pam petted Radar, Pam pushed me away", from observing her, making her even more annoyed at Radar for "stealing" attention.

I love her to death, but psychologically she's different from any dog I've ever had before. She's very intelligent, you can tell, but I think she might have doggie ADD-- she doesn't seem to connect A to B the way other dogs have in the past, and she does NOT understand verbal cues very well. An example: I say this because she doesn't seem to connect "sit" with sitting well... she does connect it, just only like 50-75% of the time... and she's not being stubborn she just doesn't get it. It's weird, and hard to describe, but my mom thought I was being paranoid or something at first but she's noticed too. We discovered she knew "rollover" already, and Mom had her do it a lot... and then other times, Sophie didn't even seem to notice she was saying it. And like I said, it's not in a rebellious "I can't HEAR you" way. I'd think she was deaf, except I can whisper her name across the room and she'll come running. It's just really, really weird... I've theorized maybe she lived with a hispanic or other non-English speaking family and learned commands in another language, so she's trying to make sense of English, trying to pick out words she knows? Only we never taught her rollover, she knew it. Then again, we're at least her third family-- maybe one of them spoke English and another didn't?

Anyway, that has nothing to do with the biting, except to say that I'm having trouble training her. :-/ We've had dogs all my life, but Sophie's weird... I ADORE her, she's my little lovebug, but she's weird.
