I call him "Monty".

He is a beautiful sable and white rattie (sorry I can't spell chiwawa!) cross.  He has a face marked like a St. Bernard, which is what I kid people he is when they ask.   And unlike my past ratties, he has a TAIL!  It is so cute.

As some of you may know, I lost my darling little Homer a while back.  I have cried every day for him, put fresh flowers on his grave, miss him like crazy.  He will always be my darling, my love.  There will never be another dog like him.

And Monty is not like him.  He is Monty, with his own looks, his own personality, his own style.  Homer would hate him (Homer was jealous) and that is fine as well.

I wish I could share pics of both Homer and Monty but my camera and my computer and my abilities are not compatible at this time...

Some of you gave me advice about getting another dog, that it would be a continuation of my love for Homer, and you are right.  The experience of Homer made me want another Rattie, Homer was such a wonderful dog, loving him one of the best things of my life, and now Monty will benefit from this all as well.

His knickname is "Monty Monster", and he is living up to that....

Been a long time since I've had a puppy.

Kate, who as you can tell, is happy, excited, and still loving Homer...

I am soooooooo Happy for you and Monty too!!!!!
This is just wonderful news! There are so many new pups here and we want to hear all about Monty and his little monster antics. I'd say that you can just go ahead and call Monty a Rat Terrier because they all have some other dogs in their back ground.
Welcome Monty and Congratulations to Kate!

So glad that you are lavishing your love on another rattie! Homer might not have liked Monty if he'd met him, but I'm sure Homer wouldn't have wanted you to be alone and sad forever.

Thanks to you all. Monty is 10 weeks old. He has a very strong prey drive; outdoors he stalks crickets which is adorable to watch; indoors, he tried his antics out on the cat, who put him in his place rather quickly. He is developing quite a healthy respect for her, and she has stopped hissing whenever she sees him--one look is all that is necessary.

He is going to be a big boy, I think--he was the largest in the litter, his feet are enormous and he is big boned. I had kind of wanted a smaller rattie, but when I saw him, size didn't matter.

I had gotten so bogged down in my grief over losing Homer that I couldn't even think of the joy he brought to my life without feeling incredible pain. I couldn't stop reliving how sick he got, his death in my arms, and I realized it was blotting out all the wonderful times we'd had and how special he was.

I was afraid of being disloyal, you know? But moving on with my life and getting another dog was not being disloyal, I came to realize. Getting swallowed up in loss was the disloyal thing, not accepting joy and love and being loved was a betrayal of how wonderful my life with Homer had been.

It was hard at first watching Monty sniff around, I knew he was aware of where Homer had been. But watching his puppy antics makes me remember Homer when he was a puppy, and it is really sweet and good.

One thing they have in common--they both have a fascination with the toilet paper roll. Gotta keep the bathroom door shut once again!

He's a chia-rat I'm glad you found another doggie to dote on!! Homer must be so happy for you
If Pixie hadn't found us, we'd never have had another little dog to love on. Kozmo's loss was...huge. I don't know how else to describe it. We felt that by getting another dog, we'd betray him in some way. We have never been more wrong!!
I have to admit that there are times that I look at Pix and think, "I wish she were more like Kozmo" but then I realize that Pixie is her own little "person" and she has her own quirks that I also adore She's perfect!!
Best of luck with Monty! I can't wait to see pictures!!!

I had actually found another rattie before I got Montie. He had the unfortunate name of "Booger"--would never have kept it. His human mother had opened a day care and was told she could not have him as ratties are not deemed good to have around small children. He was 8 months old, housebroken, gentle and smart.

He was so much like Homer in his looks. Same height, weight, button ears, sweet face, and believe it or not, he had the same birthday, December 3rd. It felt like FATE. I corresponded with his owner, she sent me pics, described him, and I fell in love. We arranged a date for pick-up (he was over 700 miles one way)... two days before we were to get him, she emailed me and said her husband didn't want to wait and had given him to someone else.

I was sad. It had felt so right, but it wasn't going to happen. And then I thought maybe it is fate, maybe he was too much like Homer and Homer was a once in a lifetime dog. Maybe it would be better to start over without comparisons and expectations.

And now I have Monty. Monty the Monster, Monty Montasaurus, he is like Homer getting nicknames fast. And he is right now lying on my feet, like Homer used to.

I really need this little guy.

Love you Homie.

Aw. I want to hug you right now.
I'm glad you found Monty. And I'm more than glad you had Homer.
I'm guessing, but could be wrong, that you don't have a digital camera, just a normal one? If that's the case if you take pics, next time you get them developed, you can usually have them developed onto a CD. And if not, if you have a digital camera but just don't know how to work it post about it and I guarantee some tech savvy person will help you out.

What a sweet story. I'm so glad that you've allowed another doggie into your life, and agree that that's what Home would have wanted for you. I think the most wonderful tribute to a great dog who has passed on is to allow ourselves to share all that dog taught us with another one. Not a replacement, but a continuation.

Hope to see you figure out the camera/computer thing so we can all see your new Monty, and so that we can see Homer, too!!!

I took Monty to the North Shore of Lake Superior for the first time today. It's just about my favorite place in the world, Homer and I had many, many outings there, including camping, long hikes, and canoe trips on some of the quieter rivers that feed into the lake.

It was really hard, maybe I should've waited a bit. I kept thinking of Homer-- I still miss him so much. Monty got tangled in his leash and I bent down to straighten things out, and I just broke out crying... Monty decided that my hair was a great thing to play with, started biting it, but then suddenly got quiet and licked my tears.

Later when he got afraid of the sounds of the waterfall, I picked him up, told him he was a good brave, boy, and then he followed me happily down to the base of the falls where he raised his face while the mist from the water settled over us both. I'm thinking we're a pretty good match, Monty and me.
