An unsavory breeder in North Carolina has been forced to surrender all the dogs on his property - about 200 dogs in total - to the county animal control.

The shelter estimates that there could be as many as 170 Rat Terriers being surrendered. We have someone on their way there now to take pictures and find out what they can about the Ratties in need, but we will need all the help we can get to save any of these dogs.

If you are anywhere near North Carolina please contact me if you can help in any way. We will need temporary fosters, transporters, and long-term fosters who can work with shy dogs for a few months - until Forever Families can be found for them.

Is this the one in Newton? I just saw this on the news this afternoon.  I live in NC and actually pass by there when I go up to visit my family.  I probably can't foster right now ( with a baby coming very soon ) but if I can transport I will be more than happy to help.

Jolene they are going to need lots of help and this will be a multi rescue effort. I am so sad for those dogs, esp those that are not going to make it but at least they will now get out of what were, apparently deplorable conditions.

What was left out of the news story was that a member of rat terrier rescue has been trying for over 2 years to pull the plug on that puppymill.  She has doggedly persisted and finally got the authorities to act today.  It was hardly quick.

Cheers to Sherri of New Rattitude!  She is a true hero!

We will be working with other rescues to foster the dogs after they are evaluated.  If you can help please contact us or one of the other rat terrier rescues or all-breed rescues.

More than two years to get something done. How sad But at least they are out now. I've watched the video and they all look adorable.

It occurs to me that no one, of course, starts out with this many dogs. Likely the owner started small, just wanting to breed and kept collecting in order to make more money. How awful and a good example of why some things need nipped in the bud before getting out of hand. There is no way this situation should have taken two years to get resolved.

OMG.....my heart is just breaking. I am not set up as a foster home with any organization nor do I know wether it's anything I could do on a regular basis. However if I can help by fostering in this situation PLEASE let me know. I could even meet someone somewhere to p/u. God. Just kills me. HOW do people do this?!

Have you checked prices lately, I've seen ratties listed as high as $600. Feed em, breed em, ween em, and sell em. Greed can cause terrible things to happen, both to doggies and our 401-Ks. These people are not loving parents like those here, it is only a source of income for them.

I don't think we can help with fostering or transportation unless some need to go down the Central Flroida coast. We can contribute to either a collection or for a specified rescue plan, not a lot, things are very tight right now.

WOW! Sherri!! Mucho Kudos!!!! I know how difficult it is to bust these people..I mean, the An Control and local authorities don't want that kind of financial headache...easier to look the other way....

Even tho many will be "lost", it's so much better than daily 24/7 suffering.

From the video, you could see so many were totally unsocialized and hostile.

Even little normally happy and eager-to-please Ratties..viscious. Had to be pulled via a snare...UGH!!! They were breeding THAT into pups????

Pups that I BET were going to Pet Shops in Atlanta, etc.

Uh Oh...I can really get into the "breeding irresponsibility" forum...but, nah. Why bother.

These stupid losers sum it ALL up......sad, they won't be arrested. No way since they surrendered the dogs. Wonder how the poor Danes are?????

UGH!!!!

Hope the many rescues can bail out most of them....

Ahh! I would love to help but since it's my parents house not mine I can't foster I don't think. Maybe a short transport, but I don't own my own car and with gas money... but still, I'd love to help somewhere, since I'm realitively close. 170 ratties!

I know. It's bad enough to run a "mill" and treat them like livestock but to leave them without proper medical care (like toenails/teeth) standing in feeces just makes me so darned angry.

They aren't so much hostile/viscious as totally scared out of their minds. You have to realize these little dogs haven't had human contact except to be tossed food....their cages don't even get cleaned....the urine and feces simply run out the bottom. So when humans approach...they behave like little wild animals.

Even through all the bad treatment many of them are very sweet dogs. (Sherri's been posting about them over on the New Rattitude Chat site.)

There is little in life more rewarding than working with a puppymill dog at the moment when they start to trust you. It will break your heart just to have one come up and say "hi" for attention as it is such a milestone. Yes, they are work and take a huge amount of patience but the pay off is huge.

You know, as really awful as this is (the mill having all these ratties), in many ways we in rattie rescue have been lucky as it seems to be rare that a puppymill has many ratties. More often they seem to have other breeds. Let's hope this is the only rattie mill for a long time.
