I am thinking of getting a second rattie so Ollie can have a little sister or brother but should I wait till he is older. I am still have trouble getting him potty trained. I don't take him outside because some people where I live have large dogs they don't have on leashes and it makes Ollie nervous to go outside so I decided to just house train him.
Anyway, should I wait till he is fully housebroken or is it better to get another rattie early on? He is four months old now. |

i think getting a second rattie is a great idea. but if it were me, i would wait until he's fully housebroken (so you only have to worry about 1 rattie mess instead of two  )
just out of curiousity, what do you housetrain him on? litterbox? potty pads? or something like the pet loo? (http://www.thepetloo.us/)

started out with just the pee pads but he would only put is front paws on them and pee in the floor lol
So I got the dog little box and I put the pee pad in the box...he is getting a bit better but sometimes he only puts his front paws in the box so of course his little weinie is hanging out and he pees on the floor...it is so funny....

I just keep telling myself he is only 4 months old....take a deep breath and start scrubbing....I have gone through alot of cleaning products and paper towels so far
lol |

| It depends. Do you want to get the messes all over with at one time or do you want to get over cleaning up messes for just one dog and then have another round of it? Me? I'm adventurous and would probably love having two puppies at the same time to see them play and grow up together. But either way you go, I say you can't go wrong with having two ratties |

Are you thinking of getting another puppy or an older dog? Are you planning to have the new dog use the pee pads as well?
My Bijou is nearly ten months old and is trained to use a litter box containing shredded paper. The breeder had started her down that road and since it was still frigid here when I got her at nine weeks of age I decided to continue with the litter box. By 12 weeks of age she was reliably using the litter box. I have not regretted it! The only negative I can think of is that when I take her somewhere I have to watch her closely as she goes not always give a strong signal that she has needs to go potty. She does however know what it means when you ask her, Gotta go potty?" and will run to the door to be let out.

Good point about the starting all over with training.
I would rather have a dog close in age to him so they can grow up together but I know with getting a rescue specifics aren't an option sometimes... |

| If you're thinking of getting an older dog, you can try to find one who is housebroken. Sophie was... I wouldn't have crossed her off my list at the shelter just cause she wasn't, but it was definitely a plus in her favor... especially since the other dog I was seriously considering was an unneutered male who was peeing on everything (they neuter them before you take them home though... but still, much harder to train) |

My two half hung out of the litter box too - of course I have 2 rat terrier/dachshund mixes (that I adopted from Ratbone) so they have a little longer body.
Of course after Scrappy learned how to potty outside, he refused to use the litter box, he'd go to the door and wait to be let out, and then Scooby stopped using the litter box too, so I have no litter box trained dogs, which works for me, but it's something to consider if you another dog and want them both to use the litter box.

| i'd say wait til he is grown, i have a grown rat terrier, potty trained, and its been such a hassle training my new puppy now 8mo old, because he cant focus because the other dog occupies his attention, he so worried about keeping up with my adult rat terrier that he often just pisses by the door instead of being patient or coming to get me, or knocking at the door. |

I guess I wouldn't be so worried about a second one right now if Ollie would pick just one spot to pee but he is all over the place, just wherever he feels like it, even in his crate or even a bear pillow he naps on in my office while I am working.
My only concern about waiting is some poor Rattie needing help, love, and attention now. |

My take is WAIT!!
I am so happy to have got Nora to this point--she is 8 months old and is finally starting to get that going outside is the only option---I wanted to to litter training cause is live high in an apartment but the hub insisted that we try. Now she goes so fast when we go out, I do not think the cold weather will be to awful..
I could have never done it with two--
4 months is such a delicate and demanding time for a pup--I am overly cautious though--many people have a lot of dogs and seem to be ok about it--I know that I need to take things slower--when nora is a year and a half we will think about I sibling.
There will always be dogs that need you--you have to think of your situation first and THEN you can do the best for everyone involved. JMO of course--Love your black and white avatar btw |
