Hiya! I've just joined this website, and I have an question for you guys. I have a three year old female dog named Bailey who I believe is a Type B Rat Terrier.  Judging on her temperment and physical characteristics she fits the breed perfectly, aside from her coat.  She has a dark brindleish coat that I haven't seen on any Rat Terriers I've looked at on the internet.  My sister bought the dog from a local pet store who told her Bailey was a Pit Bull/Dachshund, but I find that highly unlikely. So my question is, Do you think she is a Rattie, and what other possible breeds could possibly be in her blood? I'm just curious because I'm asked about her a lot.

This can also be a thread to showcase all the different coats these adorable dogs have shown, so please post pictures of your own!

Here are some pictures of her for reference.

Brindle an merle rat terriers are considered to be faults by the AKC and most breeders avoid them... I have seen a few. I do think yours looks to have a slightly dachshund body, although I certainly don't see any pit bull at all. Doesn't matter.... she's cute as can be. Welcome to the site!

Pittbull??
Now, dachshund, maybe. Type B ratties have gotten their short legs through the breeding in of Corgis and/or pocket beagles in the bloodlines however, lately some breeders have begun to breed in dachhunds. It's unfortunate as they really change the look of the dogs!! Not that dachshunds aren't cute but the classic Teddy Roosevelt Terrier doesn't have a dachshund look....the short legs come from the Corgi and/or pocket beagle. When dachshund is bred in you get the very elongated back and extremely shortened legs....not attractive in a type B rat terrier.

I found this out by looking at mixes online as my foster, Alfy, has some doxy characteristics, particulary the "turned out hips" and very different musculature of a dachshund. So either a BYB breeder bred some doxy into the line OR she came from just very bad breeding. Don't get me wrong, she's adorable, but not a classic type B aka Teddy Roosevelt aka short legged rat terrier.

Looks like another brindle ratty is here! We just adopted Tennyson Ratbone from Ratbone Rescue and he is a brindle. He is just adjusting to our home (been here only a week) and is not fond of the camera yet. Hope to get some pictures one of these days and create an avatar of him so all can see. He is a very handsome 2-year-old brindle. There is still a picture of him on the Ratbone Rescue site.

Hi, and welcome, and bless you for adopting a rattie I'm glad he's doing well and very glad you found and joined our site!!!! Looking forward of some pics. You could copy/past the Ratbone pic of Tennyson (did you keep that name?) and use it as your avatar until he's ready for his close up

Hi! Welcome!

From what I understand, brindle coats are genetically possible but is considered a flaw... BUT that doesn't really mean anything, except you couldn't put her in a show or breed her. Big deal.

Actually, from what I've read there are totally white ratties, and ratties that are "up to 90% white".... but Sophie is at least 95% white, so maybe she's "flawed" too...

But she's perfect to me!

Pam, I just have to smile when you post and I see Sophie there. Don't ya just love the one ear up and one down? We just love Button's ears that way. She looks goofy but that's the thing we love most about her!
