My mother-in-law was telling us that she uses flax oil for her dog's dry skin. Does anyone use this?? How safe is it??

Thanks!

I'm not sure, never used it. Usually a good quality food will fix this problem. What are the little one's eating?

I think I've seen flaxseed listed as an ingredient in some high quality foods. But, like Sarah said, a high quality food will usually fix this problem. Also fish oil is good for skin...and eggs.

When we got them they were eating Purina Puppy Chow so we continued on with that. What should we be feeding them??

Oh, gosh, we've done long threads on good foods. Basically, find something that doesn't have all the corn and wheat fillers. Canidae is good, Innova, Natural Balance to name a few. Check out the thread called "food poll". There are some links that are very good in that thread....you can use the links to research what food you want to try. I'm feeding Natural Balance right now, may add Canidae later. Several members feed the Canidae and very good results from it.

Yup, there is most likely the cause. There is a good thread on it under health, just to save time!! Your best bet at this point would be one of the foods MB mentioned. I guarantee you'll see a difference!!!

I add a supplement called "Dream Coat" to my dogs' food... here's a link. I also add a squirt of fish oil ...
Here's a link to the Dream Coat... it has many different type of oils in it.

In "The old days" quite a few breeders used flax seed oil to improve coats, especially with long haired dogs. About a teaspoon a day would do for a rattie, maybe a little less.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!
