I have 2 rat terrier dogs. A 12 week puppy girl named Twister and a year old boy named Buster. And within the last few months I have been alternating dog food and cooked food for them so that I can get them off of commerical food. I stared cooking for them because they wern't eating the commercial foods and I thought maybe they would eat the cooked foods. Well I have noticed they haven't been eating the cooked foods either. They play outside a lot and they are getting really skinny . I have taken them to the vet she and doesn't see anything wrong with them. They are the first rat terrier dogs we have had and I thought maybe they are a little more picky about there food. I don't know what to do. Can some one help?
Thanks |

Well, welcome, first of all! Some ratties have more whippet/Italian greyhound in their family trees and that causes them to be naturally thin....they just have great metabolism! Our training moderator, Nora, has one of those. As long as your ratties have energy and no other medical symptoms I wouldn't worry that they are thin. Do they get treats at all? Sometimes when dogs won't eat it's because they've been given too many treats or human food which has filled them up. Mine are not picky about food but others are. What kind of commercial food were you feeding them? |

Welcome!! Could you tell us a little more? Do they eat at least a little? It is hard to get the content of homemade foods right too, so possibly they could be losing weight even though they are eating what should be enough. Do you have recipies so you are sure to have a complete diet? Rat terriers are generally "skinny" dogs. It's not necessarily a bad thing if you see a few ribs. Jack only eats from 1/2cup to 1cup of dry Canidae a day. If you are providing a good quality dry dog food then they will eat when they need to. They won' t starve themselves, although they may skip a meal or two. The vet says they look good medically right? No reasons why they would both be not eating? I would stick with a high quality dry food (there are good threads on these) and just keep an eye on them. If you are really worried I would consult your vet. |

I have been giving them both peigree hard and soft foods. And I also make there treats and they eat those really well. But they have been buring them so I don't know how many they really eat. |

| Since I have been cooking for them they won't even touch the commercial dog food anymore. I try different recipes and it seems like they will eat the first bowl just fine and the next day I will heat up the left overs and they won't have anything to do with it. |

| Pedigree isn't a nutritious food, full of junk and fillers. I would switch them to a food such ad Natural Balance, Canidae, Innova, California Natural, EVO, Nature's Variety (just to name a few). Then put down the suggested amout daily and they will eat eventually. I would cut back to maybe a treat a day until they are back to themselves again. How old/big are they? |

I have a toy rattie that is about six pounds. She barely eats anything, is very skinny, but is FULL of energy. She just doesn't need much, and she is fine with it. I free feed mine, and they never eat much. If your vet seems to think they are fine, I wouldn't worry too much unless you start seeing health problems. I worry about my pumpkin too beacuse she is just so thin, but many rat terriers are built to be athletic. |

I would definitely switch to a high quality food like one of the ones Sarah named. Then I wouldn't give any treats (or not many) - eventually they will eat. They won't starve themselves! Or if you choose to make your own food for them (difficult to do and get all the nutrient they need) same thing - no treats and eventually they will eat. |
